Melissa has rapidly intensified into a category 4 major hurricane according to preliminary NHC estimates:
- from 60 to 120 kt in 24 hours (⬆️ 60 kt)
- from 90 to 110 kt in just 6 hours (⬆️ 20 kt)

This slow-moving storm will not only deliver damaging winds & storm surge but also catastrophic rainfall.

The National Hurricane Center now forecasts Melissa to reach Category 5 strength before striking Jamaica head on late Monday or early Tuesday. An exceedingly dire, catastrophic forecast unfolding as Melissa crawls and rapidly intensifies on the doorstep of Jamaica.

Ahead of UN Day, we’re highlighting the #IPCC.

The IPCC is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.

It was established in 1988 by UNEP & WMO to provide policymakers with regular scientific assessments on climate change - it's impacts, risks & solutions.

Climate.gov, a major US government website supporting public education on climate science, will likely shut down after almost all of its staff were fired. What would be worse is if the website were co-opted to publish climate denial content.
