Yeah I agree that happens, and it's useful to point it out if there's essentially deception involved--ie, the apparent stance vs the person's actual views. But what's so maddeningly common is basically scolding people for positively highlighting an act by someone who's merely persona non grata.
But this is the problem. Why would you think speaking positively of something a person has done should not be allowed because the person "has issues"? Not every positive assessment is intended as or will serve as whitewashing. Usually it's just saying "hey, let's do more of this".
Also, can we fucking bring back the ability to shrug off what doesn't matter or what is equal to all else anyway?
