When I make Touhou fanworks, I usually don't adhere to canon very strictly as I want to do my own thing with the characters and setting. My favorite fanworks are the ones that explore themes and topics official material doesn't delve into so I prefer to focus on that.

I see lots of people get riled up with how Touhou characters are in canon and it's hard for me to take seriously when characters act very differently depending on the work (Reimu is a prime example). I embraced the power of not giving a damn and interpreting them my own way.
