It is quite amusing to me how so many people don’t understand scale .

You would have to have a fleet of around 100k trucks running 24/7 down a road twice the size of the M25

Volumes of oil transitioning this strait are around 20 million barrels a day.

Roughly 70% world trade volume

I mean, I’m sure they would LIKE to make this happen.

I’m just gonna assume that everyone here knows this was satire, right?

Say what you will about the NYT and so much contemptible reporting, but they were one of the few to say this in 2024.

I guess bribe him to become a Democrat so the media and MAGA establishment would actually get angry about it, since only Dems can be traitors now

Agreed on all points. Didn't mean to talk down to you - I've just seen people asking that questions quite seriously.

How I long for Nuremberg II.

A 3D printer can't make microchips with billions of transistors, which is what any modern armament is dependent on

A 3D printer can't print with the accuracy that this weaponry demands, including the engines

(And thanks to AI, there's a critical global RAM shortage. Guess what requires memory?)

At any rate, Iran’s proxies will probably start unloading dirty bombs on forces & maybe cities before this even becomes a discussion point. There’s a reason we didn’t invade Iran and it’s not because β€œoh, we can’t beat” them. It’s because we can’t predict what will happen with asymmetrical warfare.

Probably minimal? One of the true benefits of the draft - certainly in WWII - is drew from a broader regional/political/class pool. They don’t want to feed the military with that. They want people who feel forced into the military for the economic benefit, or are true MAGA/religious fantastics.

As someone who grew up obsessed with End Times stuff, I would gently counter in their theological language that 1) no one shall know the day or time of Christ’s return so they’re following false prophets and thus 2) they’re definitionally in the Antichrist’s armies.

Dominionist motherfuckers, man.

I've been calling this as coming for decades. Some people said I was either over-reacting or hysterical. Fucking hell.

This video from NYC elected official Jumaane D. Williams, a black Tourette Syndrome sufferer, has the most thoughtful, empathetic and humane response to the BAFTA debacle I've seen so far. I think it's important to listen to someone who lives in both words.

I understand why manufacturers don't want that. I don't understand why demand dried up in the US, despite some compelling models. Is there no room?

I also thought the Ioniq 5 had a polarizing design, but it's a champ. Who knows?

I never understood why people don't gravitate to sedans anymore. I don't feel comfortable driving anything else. (It absolutely crushes me that the gorgeous Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan didn't even move the needle in the US.)

It’s interesting bc a lot of it is staged specifically as a comedy, especially in the first half, but it has too much on its mind and I appreciate that.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Secretary of Health and Human Services for the United States.

That's true. But I feel like a lot of people feel like nuclear war is something in the dusty past and refreshing the scenario might get across how imminent the threat remains and is maybe growing.

(Though maybe Villeneuve's adaptation of Nuclear War: A Scenario would be better.)

I hope so too. Trump's a fascist, but it's got to rankle him that he's underwater in every demographic that exist. This feels like a response to that.

Of course, no one should trust this shit until they hear it from neighbors on the ground.

I like Ken Marshall in it and the widow of the web sequence is spectacular and genuinely emotional, I kind of love the film but I can't pretend it's, like, a good movie that works?

29.01.2026 20:10 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

That's true, though Crimes and Misdemeanors has a real "evil is going to win no matter what you do" quality. It's much easier to understand Allen through that than the humanistic Hannah and Her Sisters, which has one of the few truly optimistic finales of any of his films. (And the only one I miss.)

They did. For years.

This guy wants children to die of things they don't *need* to die of, "TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS." (I.e., "How many of your kids will die if we refuse to pay for vaccines? *Lots?* Or 'an acceptable cost-of-business' number?" Because they're talking about "cost of doing business" numbers RIGHT NOW. 😑

This is true. But people don’t pay attention to legitimate government or news sources anymore, no matter what the political persuasion

And yeah, it’s a small percentage, but trapped in basically a 50/50 cycle, small influences are enough, alas

That’s fair, but also, we legally can’t divorce this motherfucker, and he keeps showing up in the Cybertruck he bought with OUR salary, because he doesn’t work and spends all his time screaming at β€œlibtards” on Reddit

Well - forgetting that many of us worked our asses off to defeat this monster bc we knew exactly what was coming - I remember a lot of international voices telling us Trump would only be an improvement since Biden was a genocidal maniac, so there’s plenty of blame to go around.

One of the great moments of my moviegoing life was seeing the recent 2001 restoration in Cambridge with a packed theater full of young students, watching them fall into its spell for the 1st time.

This helps: connect something older with something new they love. In this case, it was Chris Nolan.

But like Vietnam, it destroys an illusion - in this case, that America was the place with enough checks and balances to keep this from happening. It's why countries could be irritated by us but still cede a notion of defacto US leadership. That's the unrecoverable part.
