First watercolor pass on these mermaids! I love the challenge of getting the main color and value decisions made within the first hour of work. Next I'll put masking fluid on the netting so I can get nice dark washes on the lower portion of the mermaids while maintaining the lighter lines.
And they're done! I'm so happy with how this turned out. I'm starting to feel a little more confident in being able to produce finished illustrations in traditional media, not just studies. 😊This is watercolor + gouache., with a little bit of color pencil and pastel for final touches.
The film follows an Irish refugee girl and a Choctaw boy who meet in 1847 New York and journey across America together, drawing on the real historical bond between Ireland and the Choctaw Nation.
