I know this firsthand. I had to do it as a kid on our family farm. It was traumatic for me then.
Over time it gave me insights about our cruelty to animals, our domination of the living world.
So I wrote this book.
I grew up on a family farm and I had to do cruel shit like this— and worse —to conform.
The prevailing norms told me it was necessary.
It was not.
I regret every second of it.
The reason we cling to our companion animals at times like this is that they manifest calm and sanity, while we struggle to cope with the outbursts of madness and violence among Homo sapiens today.

Published writers, friends and agents tell me that the book business right now is going to the toilet. A handful of us buy and read books. All the rest do Instagram and TikTok and all such online stuff.
It’s no wonder we love war, warriors, and all of its glories.
Our great ancestor civilizations were built on it.
The warrior nations dominated others for their land, treasures, and slaves.
Warfare brought more wealth and power.
Thus empires were built. And the war culture was born.
For all of you naïve folks out there who object to the words “Animal slavery“, take a serious look at the history of domestication and pastoralism. Confining and using Others for one’s benefit was the model for the kidnapping and enslavement of girls and women.
I really like to read books, but I often wonder how many more poems and novels we need to “explore the human condition“.
Even a casual look at history and the evening news tells us all we need to know.
