Shiba Subedi is an inspiration in the field of earthquake communications, I'm very proud to have been able to work with him a few years ago. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
I think it might be time to start stockpiling thermometers π‘οΈ At some point this week the climate crisis will be solved by banning the manufacture, sale or use of all devices used for the measurement of temperature.
This is amazing! The Greenland USO (Unidentified Seismic Object) now immortalized in a cartoon π Seism-o-solver to the rescue!

Mel, the image shows the seismogram from last week's M7 earthquake in California recorded on a Rasperryshake RS1 seismograph located in the UK, 8000km away.

Christmas present bargains for UK residents only. I have a stock of Raspberryshake RS1D home seismographs for sale. I can offer these on a first come first served basis with 20% off the list price with free shipping (that's Β£420 inc VAT) message me for details
these old horizontal pendulum seismometers still give the best signals from teleseismic surface waves

The UK now has more citizen science raspberryshake seismic stations than professional ones. Some detect surprisingly good signals from 8000km away, even with sub-optimal sites tgey see big events. R94C3 is in my garden office (aka the shed) and detected P waves from todays California earthquake βοΈ
Here's one for the #geoscience βοΈ peeps, Amazing offers on Raspberryshake seismometers for the next week only, 20% off and free worldwide shipping shop.raspberryshake.org

I saw an otter in Rutland Water (a large man-made reservoir in the middle of england) for the first time on this morning's dog walk, no photos but it brightened my day.

one thousand followers ! that was quick. I guess I must be listed on some starter packs. Maybe I should start posting a bit more.

Durham and the Scilly isles , both 07:35 sunrise today. ... can you tell that I am supposed to be doing some boring admin tasks this morning
I had to think about that for a while, the relative effects of longitude and latitude on sunrise and sunset times. I then spent ten minutes finding somewhere on the south coast that has the same sunrise time today as Rutland ... it turns out it is Chesil Beach.

... (surface waves being a superpositioning of direct waves with multiples and many fold multiples ) so in the near field where most damage occurs surface waves don't really exist and it's S waves that are causing the damage.
I always struggled with answering the question "which waves cause the most damage" the textbook answer seems to be surface waves, however my understanding is that surface waves take a long distance to develop ...

Attending conferences as an exhibitor can get a bit draining, especially when they put the exhibition stands in a windowless basement. however sometimes you get to spend a week by the sea in Corfu, so not all bad. thank you to the European Seismological Commission local organising committee
