As someone who visits people in that age bracket in their homes, this is zero percent surprising to me. They often have a TV going all the time, and I have to ask if it can be turned off while I visit. You probably only need 1 guess as to which channel those TVs are most frequently on!
It is mystifying to me that various office waiting rooms have not adopted policies around this. I do not want to sick there listening to your inane little videos while at the doctor's office!
I suppose it's all relative! "Most ethical by comparison" not "actually ethical"
Oh yeah! When I ask people to do that, they are often confused! I asked an older gentleman sitting next to me on a plane to silence his phone (it was shortly before take off) because he was scrolling reels. He said, "Oh, I'll be done soon." THIS IS ANTISOCIAL
I hope this is the tip of the spear, and we have more widespread policies to end this antisocial pandemic of not using headphones or silencing devices. I had to ask a parent to have her 2-3 year old silence their tablet during an All County Band performance!
It is common here in West Virginia, where rural versions of the mainline are still fairly evangelical and conservative

The only cheese steak sandwich that I've had that was something to write home about was served up on Roswell, New Mexico and had a copious amount of Hatch green chilis in it
I do not have a take. I am free in Christ from having takes!

AIPAC probably cares. But rest assured, the WV legislature is working very hard on very important and very serious local issues too

Preaching about the Samaritan woman at the well takes on fun new dimensions, thanks to the West Virginia legislature this year! β
I also think "If we launch a war in the Middle East, Jesus will come back" is more attention grabbing than "It takes nuance and study to read this 1st century apocalyptic prophetic pseudo letter addressed to 7 churches in what we now call Turkey"
I think it is both a lack of offering up good teaching on it. But also, I have found across a number of different local churches, both UM (I was a UM pastor) and Episcopal, that people do not frequently avail themselves of those learning opportunities
He guest lectured in my seminary NT class one day and said "The Rapture isn't in the Bible" and wanted to move on, but even at Duke Div, there were some UPSET people in the room who did not want to move on haha
Great recommendation, but I imagine his schedule would require way more leeway to get him on my podcast than I'm hoping to do this
Hey chat, is there a scholar (Episcopalian or other mainline Protestant perhaps) who comes to mind to talk about actual Christian teaching around things like eschatology and Christ's return to kind of combat the "let's attack Iran to make Jesus come back" rhetoric?

It's probably fine? I think he probably lands left of center politically. He offers what I would call extra-normie United Methodist Church (compliment). I met him when I was UM pastor and found him to be friendly and humble. I'd probably vote for him
loool
wuuuut
Done!
If there is someone coordinating the potluck, you could check in. I think something vegetarian and yet protein forward is often a missing spot in potluck lineups.
