but just in having very limited storytelling tools overall, so if the character is mostly negative space the player is filling in a level of detail that you actually could not do well
like how people respond better to a smiley face than detailed but not-quite-right CGI
like, in the sense of technical limitations but also in the sense that the medium was both extremely new and changing extremely fast and everyone was still figuring out literally everything
and by technical limitations I don't mean like, the literal audio restrictions on a character's voice
in regards to video games this feels like a design decision that made a lot more sense early on, but because it was such an early precedent it became received wisdom and stuck around
