We must not choose between efficiency and human rights. We won't 'magically' increase return numbers by tearing up the rulebook. Only a lawful, fair, and dignified return policy can deliver results.

#Italy visit, day 2: I met with the Minister of Labour and Social Policy and with the Director General of the National Office against Racial Discrimination (UNAR). I was inspired by the wonderful kids I met at the Punto Luce run by Save the Children in Torre Maura.
Started my visit to #Italy by engaging with civil society representatives. Insightful exchanges on child poverty and the national #HumanRights architecture. It was also a privilege to address Universitá Roma Tre on States' duty to protect the integrity of the #ECHR.
Speaking at Universitá Roma Tre, I outlined how states have to protect the integrity of the European Convention on #HumanRights ✅ Policy grounded in evidence ✅ Upholding non-refoulement & judicial independence ✅ Upholding the equality & universality of rights. #ECHR www.coe.int/en/web/commi...
Domani a Roma!
Il #Commissario per i Diritti Umani del Consiglio d'Europa sta per iniziare una visita in #Italia, durante la quale approfondirà, in particolare, il tema della povertà minorile e lo stato dell'infrastruttura di protezione dei #diritti umani. #StayTuned
Off to #Italy today! Four days focusing primarily on issues pertaining to child poverty and the Italian institutional and legal system for the protection and promotion of #HumanRights.
European leaders need to refute the critics: Europe’s power lies not in mimicking those who oppose #HumanRights, but in showing that dignity, law, and freedom remain the only foundations on which a stable and prosperous future can be built.

This is a very important day for those seeking justice at Europe’s borders. The judgment shows that every national and EU law can be challenged under the lens of the EU charter of fundamental rights. This could be the beginning of the reconsideration of the entire anti-smuggling legislation, leaving no space for the criminalization of migration and solidarity. Francesca Cancellaro, lawyer of O.B.
Landmark ruling in the Kinsa case‼️
EU’s top court rules: Anti-smuggling laws must not violate fundamental rights.
⭕ The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) declared that helping minors under one’s care to enter the EU is not a crime.

Disconcerting.
If you think suspending Habeas Corpus "just for undocumented immigrants" is acceptable, remember that there would be NO HEARINGS and NO LEGAL RECOURSE for ANYONE detained in this way
So all they have to do is CLAIM that YOU are an undocumented immigrant to DISAPPEAR YOU

The @commissionerhr.bsky.social just released a new memorandum on Greece, denouncing persisting pushbacks and entrenched lack of accountability. High time to acknowledge the long-standing prevalence of violations at Greece’s sea and land borders and provide adequate remedy to victims.
We’ve made a series of suggestions to @ec.europa.eu to help it monitor EU funds granted to Member States for border management and ensure their use does not result in fundamental rights violations.

Strong calls for accountability by @commissionerhr.bsky.social, at the end of our visit to #Greece, focusing on human rights violations at sea and land borders and against people from Roma communities.

On the 2nd day of my visit to #Greece, I met with key national partners: the Ombudsman @synigoros, the Greek National Commission for #Humanrights, @UNHCRGreece, and civil society representatives working on accountability and rule of law issues.
Just completed the 1st day of my visit to Greece. I discussed #humanrights violations at the borders w. lawyers, NGOs, survivors of #pushbacks and of the #Pylos shipwreck. I also heard from civil society about Roma rights & engaged w. Roma people & local authorities in Halandri.
Ecco.

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance.
Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.
