Digital painting of a dark blue night sky, full of stars. There are long, smooth clouds stretching across the frame, and smalller, fuzzier ones scattered around them. The clouds are blending into the sky, shades of grey due to the time of night.
We report as we close our eyes: on nights when we have trouble falling asleep, we send our mind to wander amongst the stars. In this state of half-wakefulness, the darkness is more comforting than it is cold, and we find paths to galaxies in places no one will ever reach.

New fossils may settle debate over mysterious sail-backed spinosaurs
Spinosaurs have sometimes been portrayed as swimmers or divers, but a new species of these dinosaurs bolsters the idea that they were more like gigantic herons
In which I provide a few thoughts on the new Spinosaurus species, S. mirabilis.
www.newscientist.com/article/2516...
I also stressed the deep connections between one of the study authors - Nathan Myhrvold - and Geoffrey Epstein to New Scientist. They didn't mention it, neither has anyone else.

A new Spinosaurus species uncovered in northern Niger appears to have been a wading predator of fish like its close relatives, but it lived as many as 1000 kilometers inland from the Tethys Sea.

Illustration of a Utahraptor, a large bulky dromaeosaur with a chunky head, deep belly, thick hindlegs and long tail. It is covered in a coat of coarse feathers, including pinnate wings on the arms. It has a dark crown, white supercilium, red irises, dark auriculars, and a cream "mane" of longer neck hackles, then a dark back and tail. It is posed as if looking to the side and down slightly while walking at a 3/4 angle toward the viewer, one foot raised.
Utahraptor for today's #DrawDinosDaily. These guys feel so much like the Cretaceous equivalent of a lion to me - big, powerful, and fast.

And still no matchmaking fixes?? This feels very frustrating when you still see shit like three newbie rollers and a mid sniper (me π) getting paired against four pro level shooters in Turf War regularly. π₯² Itβs almost like teams have to be BALANCED first to even stand a chance. Whoβdβve thought?

Detail from a painting of the head and upper body of a European goldfinch, photographed with a penny and a traditional Chinese brush. The piece is small and delicate. The bird's head is roughly comparable in size to the penny, only slightly larger.
European goldfinch. Watercolour on silk mounted on paper.
I had to wash out and repaint the scapulars and marginal coverts three times. Hugely relieved it worked out in the end. π₯²
I'll post the full piece when it will be available at auction next week. π

Day 12, Balearic shearwater
Critically endangered (19,000 mature individuals, decreasing)
The population declines at a rate of about 14% per year. This bird doesnβt begin breeding until 4-6 years of age and as such, adult mortality is its biggest threat
