I think the biggest damage to the art community was the obsolescence of gallery sites (y!, deviantart, etc) and the rise of scroll-by social media, like twitter and even tumblr. Art is not ''content'', you shouldnt need to post art every day (or every month!) to be relevant. This mindset sucks.

And sure, there are many “tips” you can implement to manipulate the algo or whatever, but none of it matters if you hate what you drew! Do it for the love of the game, not for the money or attention bc frankly, there are more lucrative careers to get into if that’s all that matters to you

Ig it could be argued that very popular artists saying “just draw what you enjoy” is a little bit of survivorship bias. But it also doesn’t necessarily invalidate the advice—the only way to commit to drawing more is if you actually like what you draw, and the only way to get better is to draw more

But eventually I realized: if no one on the internet liked my art no matter what I drew, why wouldn’t I just draw something I actually like instead? Especially if the outcome is basically the fucking same. At least I know for sure that at least *one* person will enjoy my art (me)

but I’ve found it bothers me way less, bc I’ve figured out that even when I tried to chase trends I still didn’t get much attention and i also hated the art I made, and had no motivation to make anything anymore or to improve. It just felt impossibly Bad

I grew up posting “flop posts” to a very small audience. Even now, with better art, I still post to a very small audience (actually, I think my active audience now is even smaller than it was when I was like 15-16 lmao)

It’s like, entitlement. I know this bc I grew through this exact phase, looking at artists my age who were bigger than me, getting attention I thought I “deserved” more than them, so on. Yet here I am, persisting regardless, still making art and posting “poor performing” art like a decade later
