I sense a lot of people in the U.S. waiting for the movie moment when Trump dissolves Congress and marches his shock troops into major cities to decide this is fascism. That’s pretty unlikely to happen; things will carry on similarly, just with ever-more constraints on what you can do or say
A very small number of people comparatively will be grabbed off the street. Most businesses and universities won’t have accounts frozen and offices raided. Publications won’t necessarily be outright shut down. But everyone knows that it’s a possibility and will act accordingly
One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse

Once again I am suggesting that you break some rules for practice. Get comfortable with breaking rules. When the rules are hurting other people, the right thing to do is break them. We need people who follow their moral code over the rules of their society, university, employer, and government.
