For what it's worth, I do see a space for extending and maintaining existing Nuclear capacity in the medium term until a global renewable energy network is functional. But making new Nuclear the central pillar of decarbonising efforts leaves us more exposed to the consequences of unanticipated risk.
@teagsamatic.bsky.social I sense I won't have the answers that will satisfy your scepticism, but I think the benefits of a renewable future is not only safer but more desirable than one built on nuclear.
Investing in global infrastructure is an excellent way to make allies, decrease tensions, tackle poverty, not to mention address the exploitation of colonialism.
Not only do we have plenty of renewable sources in the UK ripe for expansion, including but not exclusively solar & wind, we need to invest in global energy infrastructure. Including developing economies, feeding global energy supply & creating unionised industries in places they are most needed.
My wars? I'm against wars. At the heart of most global conflict is control of non-renewable resources, whether that be Oil, Gas and Coal. The same could be the case if Nuclear expansion leads to demand outstripping supply for Uranium.
Power needs to come from a global network of renewables.
You're being a bit facetious. The point is that the safety & security of nuclear power stations cannot be secured in the face of increasing unpredictable global factors. Even with auto shut down plants it is perfectly plausible that uncontrollable factors can interfere with devastating consequences.
They do not have to be bombs to pose a huge risk. Look what happened with Fukushima. More nuclear plants in the context of a world with extreme flooding and wild fires is dangerous. Not to mention global destabilisation leading to hot wars whereby nuclear power plants will become military targets.
In an increasingly unstable and unsafe world, with unpredictable wars and extreme weather conditions, there is nothing more dangerous than suggesting we build Nuclear Power plants, which are singularly the most destructive force ever created if they are not being operated in safe & stable conditions

So Labour can find the money to 'relax' their changes to the non-dom tax regime but they can't find the money to restore the winter fuel allowance or lift children out of poverty by scrapping the two-child benefit cap 🤔
