βAlthough the full impacts of last yearβs federal actions are yet to be determined, the devastation is already visible in a community historically at risk.β

According to Member Scholar Daniel Farber of @ucberkeleylaw.bsky.social, fossil fuel companies want βweak regulations, but they want regulations.β He said repealing the finding βdoes take some of the wind out of their sails."

Op-ed: For the past year, the EPA has bowed to the demands of fossil fuel lobbyists, abandoning its core mission to protect Americans from deadly pollution in our air, water, and land.

On Friday PJM filed for a two year extension of the price collar, which will (partially) shield ratepayers from spiking capacity prices in the region (without the collar the 27/28 BRA would have been 60ish% higher than the already record high price).
This did not happen in a vacuum.
The Right's uncompromising hostility toward the administrative state should have been our first warning to protect it at all costs. And yet? Clinton/Gore. Obama/Sunstein. Biden seemed to get the memo, but too little, too late.

My research is on working class women and AI and the ONE consistency among all of the interviews weβve done so far is concerns about data centers and environmental impact. We do not bring it up - they do. Every single one.
A deeply underreported story. I know so many people struggling to pay their electric bills
Kudos to the four law firms that stood firm against Trump's illegal campaign of intimidation: Jenner & Block, Susman Godfrey, Perkins Coie and WilmerHale. Nice when law firms defend the rule of law.
Yes, in every generation, here in the US. WWI and WWII; Cold War threat of nuclear war; Jim Crow; the early-70s era of Vietnam war + regular airplane hijackings + more; the entire pre-1970s era when women werenβt allowed to have their own credit & were systematically excluded from most professions.

We asked our policy team to weigh in on the State of the Union β the longest in US history. Here are their key takeaways:
A thread! π½
Great movie! π
Overall take: The address was disjointed, grievance-driven, and narcissistic. When a real problem was raised, it was only as an excuse to justify more violence and domination. Meanwhile, itβs getting harder and harder for most of us to survive in the United States.
Opposition targeted: There was little cross-party support during SOTU 2026. Some Democratic representatives protested that Trumpβs government has killed Americans, and others (including their guests) were forcibly removed.
π Foreign Policy: Trumpβs strategy is straight from the β80s and the racist, violent War on Drugs, only applied internationally. Think: threats over diplomacy and chaos over cooperation.
On the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles: More (thinly) veiled racist threats. Trump says, βWeβll do a good job there,β and he has established a task force to βensure that Los Angeles will be βsafe.ββ Weβve already seen what authoritarians mean when they say βsafe.β
Sanctuary cities: Trump also affirmed that the terrifying immigration enforcement weβve seen will continue in sanctuary cities and blue states, especially cities with large Black populations like Memphis, New Orleans, and Minneapolis. We canβt look away.
Immigration & ICE: Trump doubled down on white supremacist ideology, singling out Somali immigrants in Minnesota as βpiratesβ and blaming them for housing shortages and inflation. There are hardly any words for this racism. Well, hereβs one: Gross.
π‘ Data Centers & Electricity: Trump is right. Data centers use more energy than our βold grid can handle.β He announced a βratepayer protection pledge,β forcing tech to power itself. Unfortunately, the details are vague, and this doesnβt solve the issue of polluting tech that few Americans want.
π Economy & Inflation: After some lies about inflation going down, Trump admits that the government wonβt be paying out refunds on tariffs to customers or companies. So whereβs that money going? Itβs unclear.
The SOTU fell broadly into three parts: economy, immigration, and foreign policy. Per usual, his speech was heavy on the word count and light on facts β very much in line with the authoritarian style of government weβre already witnessing.

These people are amping up the cruelty to trans people and immigrants because everyone realizes things suck so they have to throw slop to the piggies. It is incumbent upon the rest of us to recognize the weakness that signals and turn it into courage to stand in the gap.
EPA's mission is supposed to be protecting the environment. That's what it was doing in 2009 in a formal finding that carbon emissions endanger our health and welfare. This series dissects its rationale for repealing the finding in a stark betrayal of its mission.

"The utility has pointed to the regionβs historically cold winter as a cause of rising heating demand and costs...But in an email to The 51st, Pepcoβs own data show that their D.C. customers actually used more energy in January 2025 than January 2026."
For too long, activists from multiple social movements have been maligned as βextreme," or derided as punchlines, when they were just right decades before everyone else. So much of this political and cultural moment is downstream of that.
