Essential reading from @ddayen.bsky.social, who has been one of the best explainers of the Warner Bros. situation. And I'm not just saying that because he's linked to my work. π
As the Warner Bros. sale unfolds, groups from Cinema United and @wgawest.bsky.social to @arthouseconvergence.org are trying to organize Hollywood's workforce against the wave of Hollywood mergers. My latest for @thewrap.com

Verge headline: ICE is pushing Minneapolis underground by Gaby Del Valle Photos by Jack Califano Photo depicts a white brick wall plastered with two recurring posters: One that says Alex Pretty ICU Nurse - Murdered by ICE, shows his photo with red highlights. Another is similar but reads Renee Nicole Good American Mom - Murdered by ICE
ICE may have lost the battle for public opinion, and its operation may be hampered by local pushback, but it has succeeded in one respect: It has instilled terror in Minnesotaβs immigrant communities, forcing them into the shadows.

Here I'm thinking, "Oh wouldn't it be amazing if she got the handshake" AND THEN IT HAPPENED.
I got the chance to talk with Markiplier after his film "Iron Lung" landed a $17.8 million opening weekend with no distributor. We talked about how he got his audience to buy into the output from his "unhealthy addiction" to creative projects. #FilmSky @thewrap.com

Variety is never living that Sinners headline down
Heed my words: If you're doing it right, film criticism is a full-contact sport.
Let the professionals take this cinematic concussion for you. It's not worth it, I swear.
My review of MELANIA, the feature film version of that creepy obsessive wedding video from LOVE ACTUALLY, is at @thewrap.com.

My Oscar nom rankings, which I suspect would get me side eyes from some:
Sinners
Train Dreams
Hamnet
One Battle After Another
F1
Sentimental Value
The Secret Agent
Frankenstein
Marty Supreme
Bugonia
I have the vinyl for the Brutalist soundtrack. Would have loved to see a special edition of that for Ann Lee.
Given how hard A24 went in the paint for Marty Supreme, asking them to do that with another film this year would have been a tall ask, but that's why you push to next year.
In a better world, A24 gets this movie and holds it until fall 2026.
Oh, that won't be done to Sinners. It's being done to OBAA on behalf of Sinners.
To get out ahead of it, yes SINNERS is that good, we wonβt be doing the thing where once a movie we all loved gets a bunch of nominations it becomes overrated populist crap, we simply will not be doing that this time.
We can only wonder how "Testament of Ann Lee" would have done had Searchlight not completely fumbled it.
I was kinda settled into pulling for Sean Penn to win a second Oscar for "OBAA"...but that was before Delroy Lindo became an option.
That man was screwed out of a nod for "Da 5 Bloods." Time to right that wrong. #FilmSky
I would have liked for Goto to have been the one Tsuji beat in the Dome, but the story they told with Takeshita ended up being the right one. Still hoping Goto can get his Dome main event against one of the new gen main eventers.
Itβs so weird that MARTY SUPREME came *this close* to being the second vampire movie nominated for Best Picture this year.
I'm gonna need Evil vs. Dominik so damn bad.
I know it's time for guys like Goto to put over the next generation, but dammit after getting a taste of him as champion last year I want MORE.
I really need all the "F1" nominees to agree that if any of them win, they have to call their Oscars "Piastri" onstage. #FilmSky
Also mindblowing that "Wicked: For Good" was COMPLETELY shut out. Even if the crowded acting races understandably squeezed out Erivo and Grande, there was not even a second nomination for last year's costume winner, Paul Tazewell. #Oscars #FilmSky
"No Other Choice" is a tough snub for Best International Feature but honestly I don't know which film I would take out. This was a stacked category this year. "Kokuho" was also a worthy film that didn't make it. #Oscars #FilmSky
Pretty happy with the #Oscars nominees this morning. Would have put in "It Was Just an Accident" for Best Picture over "Bugonia" but otherwise I like this list.
Of course, the most joyless, insufferable online snobs are going to treat the "F1" nomination as an unforgivable stain on the Academy. π
Carmen Sandiego erasure here.
