Just-fired Kristi Noem is justifying the cruelty of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement by misquoting George Orwell. Orwell never wrote that line. His real words exposed the moral tension of violence done in our name - not an excuse for cruelty or abuse of power.
This quote is widely misattributed to Orwell - he never wrote it. In Notes on Nationalism (1945) he said: “Those who ‘abjure’ violence can do so only because others are committing violence on their behalf.” Orwell wasn’t praising violence - he was exposing the moral tension societies often ignore.
