How else do we explain most journalists writing through the same very narrow lenses or perspectives that often are disconnected from the diversity of lived experiences in the world? It goes beyond content influencing form too, especially where ad quantity or quality are what's keeping the lights on.
At the same time, without secondary means of funding, yes, who folks can sell their journalism services to and still survive is a powerful force.
Yes I should clarify I intended for my comments to be placed in the context of a ton of other factors influencing a journalist's decision-making and saying everything comes down to a donor is somewhat of an oversimplification of what I was trying to communicate.
And all this matters because being reliant on private or liberal foundations doesn't mean journalism is independent of class biases. Absolutely journalists are going to think twice about upsetting their wealthy donors or their think tank-like foundations who are ideologically aligned with the former
Actually goes even further back than that to Rockefeller and others like the Mccormicks + Carnegies having massive PR fallout from Haymarket, company "unions", and ongoing environmental catastrophes which led to them to go on "philanthropy" spending sprees to try and recover from the PR damage.
