In the main setting of my story most mages work for a guild called the crows who work primarily as mercenaries. If you are born in a family associated with the crows you usually join one of their academies to learn combat oriented magic and join the guild after graduation.

Depends on where you're born and what family you come from. Technically everyone has the talent for magic but you usually need to get exposed to it from a very young age to learn it so the abilities usually only get fostered in specific families who start training their children very early.
