This microscopic freshwater organism, Limnias malicerta, is a rotifer, recognized by its rotating wheel-like structures. It uses spinning cilia on its head to swim and capture tiny food like algae and bacteria.

Marsupials previously thought extinct for millennia discovered in New Guinea The chances of finding one mammal species thought to be lost was โ€˜almost zeroโ€™ and finding two is โ€˜unprecedentedโ€™, biologist Tim Flannery says

"Flannery says the discoveries are evidence the Vogelkop was once a part of the Australian continent that had later become part of New Guinea."

The PCR positivity map is out, and positivity is up slightly in England, down slightly in Scotland.

Hotspots haven't changed, but the levels in those hotspots have.

Continuing the 'spectacular' theme, here's Early Meadow-grass Poa infirma on Hayling Island. Once a rarity restricted to the SW of England, it's now quite widespread and a guaranteed find here in coastal Hampshire. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

๐Ÿšจ It looks like the UK government is gearing up to upend copyright law in favour of AI companies, legalising the theft of their work.

This is despite creatives' huge protests, and despite previous proposals being roundly rejected by the public.

Please spread the word.

Civilisation is a house of cards. The bottom card is a flower. The card holding that flower in place? A bee. We spend billions searching for life on Mars while actively extinguishing the very life that enables us to exist on Earth. Wake up.

Is it a coincidence that on the day Labour scrapped incentives for landowners to sympathetically manage the few remaining wildflower-rich grasslands, including ancient ones...Labour got a drubbing in the polls in Gorton and Denton.

Maybe no direct connection, but the direction of travel is clear.
