From models to molecules: self-organized and instructed modes of developmental patterning - Nature Reviews Genetics In this Journal Club article, David Brückner discusses how seminal molecular genetic studies by Driever and Nüsslein-Volhard and Sick et al. demonstrated that both instructed (Wolpert model) and self-...

Self-organized or instructed?

My @natrevgenet.nature.com Journal Club traces how classic papers revealed two modes of developmental patterning & why the debate between Turing and Wolpert is as timely as ever for organoid engineering today

New preprint! Do you like ocean waves? We found similar waves on bacterial colonies! We found that this collective behavior, known as rippling, is nothing but surface waves on an active nematic. @princeton.edu @mpipks.bsky.social @ub.edu @icreacommunity.bsky.social

In May 2024 we had a great workshop on chemotaxis in the MPI PKS in Dresden! The social impressions are in the picture below, and the scientific discussions are summarised in Angewandte Chemie lnkd.in/d6ymRhGK
What a nice way to remember!

🤔 Can tissue patterning & tumor heterogeneity emerge in a self-organized way?

We show that self-organized mechanical stress & density gradients pattern tumors in vitro & in vivo, and this behavior is quantitatively predicted by a mechano-chemical active fluid model!

How do cells navigate up gradients of adhesive proteins?
🤔

Termed "Haptotaxis", this effect is ubiquitous in cell migration, but it's mechanism was poorly understood

We show that passive friction directs cells & explains complex trajectories on gradients

The actin cortex acts as a mechanical memory of morphology in confined migrating cells - Nature Physics Cells often navigate through confined spaces. 🤔 Can migrating cells 'remember' their past trajectories?

In collab w/ @sgabriele.bsky.social & @kyohalie.bsky.social, we address this question:

Confined cells undergo geometry-sensitive morphology switches, and these switches depend on the past migration history!

This is insane. Labour is making the very same mistake the Tories made but in a more catastrophic way. A left-leaning party adopting an ultra-right fascist agenda: what could go wrong?
