This is obviously a rapidly evolving story, but I still think it is likely that the SKS was the weapon used. I first saw the photo of the safe when NYT dropped a similar story two hours after I published mine, so I'm working to update the story so it remains accurate.

So, while the focus should *definitely* be on access to firearms in relation to cases of mental health issues, part of the conversation about mental health issues needs to focus on the culture of isolation that drives radicalization online and what we can do to stop that from happening.
There is a blueprint for this kind of thing that we can see in a number of shootings in the United States: the Charlie Kirk killing wasn't done by a raving radical leftist - it was done by someone terminally online and checked out from the real world.
Trying to piece together a motivation at this point suggests this was a 'meme' shooting, rather than a political one - the point is to create terror, chaos, and political polarization, rather than put forward an explicit political message.
