Like even very expensive shoes will cost you less than 50 cents per mile. And for used shoes we're talking less than 10 cents per mile
But yeah I guess my main point is that people who are gonna spend $200+ on hiking shoes generally want the best performance out of the shoe, not the best durability. Especially since that is a tiny expense compared to what some other hobbies require.
I prefer to get my hiking shoes used. At a decent used outdoor store you can find really good lightly used shoes for ~$50. I typically get around 500-600 miles out of trail runners before they are unusable
You can get very good trail runners/boots (I prefer la sportiva, salomon) for $100-$200 new. But these are very good in the sense that they are high performance: grippy, light, comfortable. Not gonna last you thousands of miles
Boots are still required when significant snow is present, but high end boots are also optimized by the weight/comfort standard now
It is pretty well established in the hiking community that trail runners are better for your feet/ankles and quicker than boots. So the high end hiking footwear market has shifted to the place where the ideal shoe is optimizing for weight/comfort instead of durability
I know that you're not really talking about boots specifically, but I suspect a driving force behind that trend is the shift towards trail runners/lightness
Democrats (especially elected Democrats) can learn to fight as hard as the opposition, or they can keep wishing that someday the Republicans might stop being evil
Breaking an anti-war Marine's arm in a public meeting is certainly not cowardly. It's aggressive, overt, evil. Brazenly ignoring court orders is not cowardly. Republicans are exercising the power that they have taken hold of.
There are words you could use to describe Republican conduct at this moment, but I don't think cowardly would be accurate.
Are you serious? They love this. Republicans have been salivating at the prospect of war with Iran since before I was born
I can hear words if I want to but are you talking about like "I will open the microwave now" monologuing?
But I feel like this is more an issue with when work/school require people to wake up. There's nothing natural about the typical work day, and maybe that should be reformed instead of changing what time our clocks say
standard time sunsets being ~4pm for much of winter is a huge mental health issue for me and I'm sure many others. I would much rather have some light after work is over than have sun while I am sleeping/commuting at 7am
Nice! Yeah bouldering is really great for getting strong and learning technique. But I love the endurance aspect of top rope. It's such an amazing feeling to send a route where you are giving absolutely everything at the top bc you've used up all your energy
A lot of the time for me, taking rest day(s) and then trying the climb at the beginning of the next session makes a huge difference.
Also thinking about and planning which positions on the climb are good for resting and which aren't worth it is a good thing to practice
Persistence is so important in climbing!
Are you trying to break into 5.9? Or was this something you were expecting to send first try?
They chose these pieces of writing out of hundreds, if not thousands of options. In my opinion, justifying and endorsing mass murder is not within the bounds of civil discourse.
What a naive way to interpret the role of an op ed. It's not an issue of media literacy to disagree with you. The nyt publishing something may not be a full throated endorsement. But, it is claiming a baseline level of quality in the argument, and that the opinions are acceptable enough to publish.
Why do they call it astronomy when you as on my the moon cool as in miss space the a moon really
You might enjoy the movie A Woman Like Eve, which features lesbians and a houseboat
I wonder what an organization where kids dress up in uniforms, organize into 'patrols', progress through ranks, salute the flag, swear oaths to their country, and shoot guns has to do with the military
I can also find no demographic information about the sample other than that there were 111 trans people out of 1055 lgbtq adults
There is also the issue of making the estimate of 401,000 trans people have moved and presenting this number without error bars. Can this study really distinguish between 401 and 402 thousand? Or even 400 and 500 thousand?
I am aware that small random samples can be statistically powerful.
But 111 people can really only be a starting point for an issue like this, considering there is more detail involved. With a sample of 111 it is likely that some states have no representative in the sample.
I don't doubt the findings at all but n=111 trans people being called a nationally representative sample is so disappointing. We deserve better data about our oppression.

Thanks! It's very fun
Maybe take a wilderness first aid course, learn to navigate with paper maps, carry an inreach type sos device, enough water/food, tell someone where you are going and when you will be back
