Hey y'all, if you aren't aware, Discord announced that starting in March they will automatically set all accounts to a "Teen-by-default" level, and require a face scan or ID for full access. From what I understand from their press release (see screenshot); for our server, the only thing affected would be access to the age-gated spaces like ⁠🔞spicy-zone🥵 or ⁠🔞azel-spicy-art🔞. Unfortunately, I don't think this is a surprising move from Discord, but I also don't think these changes will really interrupt the main usage of this platform for chatting and gaming. It will however, affect your access to adult images on Discord. We've seen the rise and fall of enough online services (see the hundred of Twitter-likes over the past couple years) to know that the first thing that pops up probably won't last. As a creator of adult artwork, queer person, and general user of the internet, the creep of identity verification and loss of online privacy is a big concern of mine. It is especially concerning given that just months ago, Discord suffered a data breach of customer data and IDs they had previously collected. I would encourage everyone to make smart choices about willingly giving out your private identity information online, for Discord or any website. And I would encourage people everywhere to engage with their governments when they try to pass laws that strengthen the surveillance state and weaken privacy. Excerpt from Discord press release- Default Safety Settings Starting in early March, all new and existing Discord users globally will be assigned new default settings that support age-appropriate experiences while keeping privacy front and center: Content Filters: Discord users will need to be age-assured as adults in order to unblur sensitive content or turn off the setting. Age-gated Spaces – Only users who are age-assured as adults will be able to access age-restricted channels, servers, and app commands. Message Request Inbox: Direct messages from people a user may not know are routed to a separate inbox by default, and access to modify this setting is limited to age-assured adult users. Friend Request Alerts: People will receive warning prompts for friend requests from users they may not know. Stage Restrictions: Only age-assured adults may speak on stage in servers. Last year, Discord successfully launched a teen-by-default experience in the UK and Australia, and this global rollout builds on that approach to deliver consistent, age-appropriate protections worldwide.
