One of the fun things about tidepooling is running into other people who like looking closely at the weird wonders of the world -- a gaggle of local science teachers were crawling over the rocks too, and one of them showed me this orange-peel doris (Acanthodoris lutea)

I get that people are deeply annoyed by iNat right now, but despite its deep flaws, I hope people can see that a better iNat, both the site functionality and the community, is worth fighting for.
Here's my personal perspective.
Exactly, especially concerned with if the data and models they generate will be shared with google for other (non-inat) products.
This was pretty much my same reaction. I'm not pro-AI, but the concept they are proposing isn't necessarily horrible, especially considering that they're using the money to generate a demo version of it. I'm most immediately concerned about data use and consent for training.
okay so now we have a bit more clarity and idk, it's not the *worst* case scenario and there's a world where this could even be a genuinely interesting use case (after all, having those things pointed out is key to learning IDs). but i'm still not overall thrilled bc...
OMG back in 2020 I tried so hard to find velvet worms in Indonesia, from historical data and living observations, but found nothing. Finally some people took photos of them in 2023-2024 www.inaturalist.org/observations...

I’m on one of ASMs IDEAA committees and we have received 0 communication from ASM staff on why this is happening. I had to find out via social media. Extremely disappointing.
