Excited to share our JEP paper! We surveyed Black Summer victims and found sense of community β†’ adaptive capacityβ€”particularly when valuing diverse interests is endorsed. Thanks to @jolanda-jetten.bsky.social @hemapreya.bsky.social @drcharlie.bsky.social authors.elsevier.com/a/1mcBZzzKDTmk-

I think part of the reason everyone is so blown away by this Carney speech is it's so long since we heard an actual grown-up articulate serious thoughts about the world. Empty vessels have been making a lot of noise

Labor considering extending new hate speech protections to LGBTQ+ Australians and religious groups Anne Aly said the government was β€˜open to considering extending the protections to other types of hate’

Q. Why should LGBTIQ+ Australians trust the PM's answer that he would consider adding further grounds to hate speech laws *after* the current Bill is passed given his past broken promise on protecting LGBTQ+ students & teachers?

A. We shouldn't.

Every opportunity politicians provide for you to tell them about how chronic underfunding of research in Australia is affecting your particular fields, people, working conditions etc. is extremely important.

Gender-affirming surgeries may be added to Medicare – but the evidence is still being reviewed Without rebates, surgeries for trans people can cost between $20,000 and $100,000.

"Contrary to common misconceptions, regret is very rare. Less than 1% of people decide it was the wrong choice to undergo gender-affirming surgery and even fewer request surgery to return their body to what it was (so-called β€œdetransition”)."

David Pocock claims political stitch-up to protect ANU leaders Labor and Liberal senators band together to vote against the release by ANU of hundreds of potentially damaging documents.

β€œThis is a protection racket. The major parties in the Senate teamed up to protect one of their own and senior ANU leadership … rather than acting in the best interests of the staff and students who are crying out for support.”

We only made it about a quarter of the way across the bridge before the march was turned around. A huge crowd, hugely diverse: proud to be there with my family #MarchforHumanity

A *huge* problem. It also includes search committee positions, review requests, letters of recommendation, P&T reviews (so, so many of these post tenure)β€”it goes on and on. And the social penalties for women saying no are so dramatically higher than when men say no.

Excited to share
@seoyeonbae211.bsky.social's first preprintβ€”an ambitious global study of human motivation!

Using data from 900,000+ people in 100+ countries, we find altruistic motives consistently outweigh egoistic ones across cultures.

ANU staff say enough is enough: There is no justification for further job losses and budget cuts This has had a significant impact on our careers, our lives, and our university.

β€œWhat we do have are two independent analyses of ANU's 2023 financial statements - one by S&P Global, the other by two ANU Professors of Economics. Neither supports the executive's claim of a $126 million operating deficit”

Cash-strapped ANU splurged $80k on Davos party ANU financial dire straits have been building for years with expenses outstripping revenue. Lavish trips to Davos did little to help keep costs down.

It's worth remembering that last year #ANU staff end of year parties got cancelled - oh, and that ANU leadership asked staff to give up their pay rise...

No wonder @NTEUnion members have no confidence in ANU leadership.

Feeling incredibly bloody lucky to have been successful with our #DP25. The system feels like such a lottery but it’s nice to finally get an ARC run on the board. Looking forward to getting started.

To those prepping 2026 Discovery Projects EOIs while still waiting on 2025 outcomes:

I don't know when they'll be released. I'm sorry.

Remember, ARC *planned* this. Planned outcomes for 20–29Nov & 13Dec EOI deadline.

They knew ~500 teams would now be wasting time prepping EOIs.

In a world where it feels like we are growing apart, how do we make the opposite happen and grow our moral circles? Our new paper, just accepted in Mindfulness, found a brief compassion focused intervention can do just this! Great with Dr Charlie Crimston and Dr April Hoang. Paper coming soon…
