A battleship grey LAARS MightyTherm domestic hot water boiler, a stout steel box surrounded by piping and pumps.
This natural gas boiler has been producing hot water for my small midcentury apartment building since 1975. We will finally retire it next month and replace it with a pair of electric heat pumps. Stay tuned.

Humanity heating planet faster than ever before, study finds
Researchers identify sharp rise to about 0.35C every decade, after excluding natural fluctuations such as El NiΓ±o
It doesnβt matter whether the rate of global warming is increasing. Itβll never cease to amaze me that people donβt care that itβs happening at all. It should be the most alarming thing ever.

The upgraded buildings
This week I toured a successful deep climate-and-energy retrofit of a non-market, multi-family housing community near King Edward & Trafalgar Streets. Electric heat pumps now provide residents with efficient heating & cooling while upgraded windows & insulation keep suites comfortable.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim started false claim councillor βhanded out illegal drugsβ
VANCOUVER - Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim accused city Coun. Sean Orr of "handing out illegal drugs on Christmas Day" in a briefing for Chinese-speaking reporters earlier this month, in a
"Sim on Tuesday had applauded Coun. Lenny Zhou for 'acknowledging his mistake' and retracting elements of the claim that Zhou shared on Chinese-language social media, but Sim did not reveal that it was he who originally made the claim in the Feb. 6 briefing."

βEarlier this week, I posted a video on social media outlining my opposition to a motion on supportive housing. In that video, I made remarks regarding other Vancouver City councillors. My comments were based on incorrect information, and for that I unequivocally apologize. I am retracting my statement, and Iβve taken down the video.
βI fully support the pause of net new supportive housing, and I do believe that there are significant issues around how many facilities operate. There are members of Council who have made it clear that they support the provinceβs model of supportive housing and the liberalization of drug use in our city. Those are positions that I fundamentally disagree with.
βI am proud to be a passionate advocate for engaging my community in civic dialogue. I will continue to fight for Vancouverites but in this case, I did not live up to the standards that I strive for.β
UPDATE: Vancouver Lenny Zhou has apologized for a video he posted on WeChat where he said without evidence that multiple opposition councillors were drug users and dealers

In October 2021, at its pand3mic peak, the market valued Rad Power Bikes at USD$1.65 billion. The company just handed over the keys to a Florida outfit for less than 1 percent of that figure. techcrunch.com/2026/01/26/r... #ebike #ebikes #RadPower #mobility

Trump team plans to break up βglobal mothershipβ of climate science
Much of the National Center for Atmospheric Researchβs non-climate portfolio will be dispersed, the White House says.
Here's our reporting on the proposed dismantling of the jewel of US atmospheric science, @ncar-ucar.bsky.social.
The plan is to break NCAR apart and disburse some parts to other locations (like the research aircraft fleet) and eliminate others.

In its 2023 budget, the province
committed $100 million to fund such active transportation infrastructure over three years.
While this represented the provinceβs largest investment of its kind until that point, given active transportationβs extensively documented co-benefits, the amount is modest. (To put it into perspective, the funding amounts to 0.2% of the $5 billion the province subsequently directed to widening Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley.)
