I think I'll do that. I mean, as you can see I've already pre-creased the front cover of my copy.
What next? (After the one I interrupted.) I was going to go with Compass but I was at my local indie yesterday and they had The Deserters. I'm a bit torn at the moment.
Paused what I was reading because I picked this up, checked out the first few pages, and couldn’t stop. I think it’s those tenses; they keep the pace at a zip. Anyhoo, only 140 pages. A joy from Mathias Énard and @avecsesdoigts.bsky.social.
So smoooth. What do you use for puréeing?
Glad to hear it. So excited!
Thanks! I’ve waited too long!
LOL. They do make the work of a first-time writer look like those of some recent Nobel Prize winners. The great equalizer.
Even more excited now! For no good reason, I'm going chronologically and already halfway through Tell Them of Battles. Just wonderful.
Finally, my fourth find: #JorgeLuisBorges' The Book of Imaginary Beings, tr. Andrew Hurley and illus. Peter Sís, which supplants a ratty old (unillustrated) paperback. A hardcover, remaindered, but appears to be a first edition, first printing. 🧵 (4/4)
The Gravediggers' Guild is translated by Frank Wynne, whose work I will be reading for the first time, with all anticipation. 🧵 (3/4)
Tell Them of Battles is a slim volume with a lovely cover. The dark brushstroke at the centre is glossy; the rest is matte. It is clothbound 🤤😋😍 and appears to be a first printing. Lavish praise for the translation from John Darnielle @themountaingoats.bsky.social. 🧵 (2/4)
Three incredible Mathias Énard used-book finds, plus one. Compass and Tell Them of Battles, Kings, and Elephants, tr. @avecsesdoigts.bsky.social; and The Annual Banquet of the Gravediggers' Guild, tr. @terribleman.com. My first Énards!
Compass is a hardcover first edition, first printing. 🧵 (1/4)
Going to a movie in an almost empty house is the only way these days. People on their phones, talking loudly…I'm getting old. 🤷🏽♂️
So what are you doing about it?
So…good luck, have fun, don’t die?
Click on it over and over and over again and watch those flowers fall virtually at his feet. 💐🏆♥️
Prove this place is good for culture and post a good book cover. #Proust #Proustsky
Old-tyme knowing what begging the question means captured in the wild!
As against a dead person, snicker, snicker.
She’s no Nobel Prize laureate Bob Dylan.
Yes!
“numero”
A capital N followed by that symbol (which I assume comes out in superscript) is an old-school way of typing Nr. or # (as in “number”).
Either that or “Two pigs porking.”
LOL. It now occurs to me that you might be reading it in French!
Go with the Scott Moncrieff/Kilmartin/Enright version. Volume 5 of the Scott Moncrieff/Carter edit has a lot of errors. A LOT. I MEAN A LOT. The Penguin Proust is not great. I’d say wait for Volume 4 of the Oxford Proust, which is due out in July, but you seem raring to go.
My favourite version, of course, is Lena Horne's.
But Heathcliff ♥️
Bookends to a historic career at the Met. Scroll up for her debut in Trovatore, then continue here for her farewell in Aida. Happy 99th birthday tomorrow, #LeontynePrice! www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_56...
