Commissioner Rodney Ellis (Precinct 4) and Texas House Reps. Gene Wu (137) and Lauren Ashley Simmons (146) celebrated the launch of Harris County’s first-ever AAPI commission.

HCDP staff and volunteers helped organize and distribute food for families in need at Bethel’s Heavenly Hands as part of our monthly Day of Action, an organization that serves 5000 families each month.

SB 434, authored by Senator Borris Miles (13) has passed out of the House. This bill would allow the Harris County Hospital District to hire peace officers to protect hospital employees, patients, and their families from workplace violence.

Commissioner Adrian Garcia (Precinct 2) has initiated over 75 infrastructure projects totaling an investment of more than $133 million in Harris County. These projects focus on improving sidewalks, roads, drainage systems, and hike-and-bike trails.

Rep. Ana Hernandez (143) passed HB1562 and HB1732 out of the House, which will help make massage establishments safer for everyone in Texas, adding safeguards to combat human trafficking and sexual assault occurring at massage establishments.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Commissioner Adrian Garcia (Precinct 2) jointly requested approval of a resolution designating May 8, 2025 as Deputy Sheila Jones Day in Harris County.

Commissioner Lesley Briones (Precinct 4) led an initiative approved by the Commissioners Court to invest $4 million in expanding resources for survivors of domestic violence. The Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC) will receive an initial award of $1 million to lead the effort.

Judge Katherine Thomas (Criminal District Court 184) and Councilwoman Carolyn Evans-Shabazz (District D) hosted a community safety town hall.

Texas House Bill 3860 passed the House unanimously. Introduced and authored by Representative Alma Allen (D-131), the bill expands employment opportunities for incarcerated individuals, allowing them to obtain certain occupational licenses and practice specific trades while still in prison.

Congressman Al Green (D-9) announced that his Articles of Impeachment against President Trump will be introduced in the House next week.

Judge Pamela Medina (County Probate Court 2) hosted a forum to discuss the first Mexican-American civil rights case heard by the Supreme Court.

Menefee hasn’t been shy about pushing back on the administration’s agenda.

He’s been a consistent critic of Trump’s policies, and just last month, he teamed up with Precinct 2 Commissioner @adriangarciahtx.bsky.social to back a legal challenge against Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship…

I'm joining the legal fight against President Trump.

@adriangarciahtx.bsky.social and I are challenging Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship.

The Constitution is clear: If you’re born in the U.S., you’re a citizen. Full stop.
