Opinion: What's red and takes 1,000 days to create? Vancouver bus lanes, apparently | Urbanized
Why is the City of Vancouver taking so long to implement long-promised bus lanes that only requiring paint and signage?
There are a million transit riders in Metro Vancouver and we deserve better than to be stuck waiting in traffic and waiting for action.
This article from our volunteer @michaelhall.bsky.social is as relevant as ever!

We've been waiting YEARS for a single new bus lane. They aren't expensive, they just need signs and paint, and they could be delivered in a matter of days if they were a priority.

Disappointed but not surprised to see that the 2023 bus priority motion from @sarahkirbyyung.bsky.social has been scaled back and the 2024 bus priority motion from @christineboyle.bsky.social has been postponed.

West 49th could use space reallocation to accommodate active transpo or bus lanes. It's 4 lanes wide, of which only 2 are usable because of an occasional parked car.

This is amazing work, at the headline level itβs grounded, practical, and seems effective without decades of money questing in Ottawa. The work Movement is doing blows me away which is why you should be like me in this way only and donate monthly.

Surrey's Transit Future | Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders
The City of Surrey and TransLink are working to update Surreyβs transit network. Movement has created our own plan for what we think transit in Surrey should look like.
Surreyβs Transit Future is our vision for the transit network in Surrey. We conducted engagement with Surrey residents and Movement volunteers to inform our plan. This plan was led by our volunteers Ahasan Bhuiyan and Abby Ivison with support from staff. Give it a read!

Vancouver announces bus lanes on 49th, Movement reacts with Heated Rivalry-themed rally.
Does Hudson Williams support bus lanes on 49th Avenue, and will he celebrate his birthday with us at our lookalike competition?
The City of Vancouver has just announced all day bus lanes on 49th Ave. Movement strongly supports this as the push for bus lanes on 49th was Movementβs first campaign back in 2023, and weβre excited to see results. The question is: Why only Cambie to Fraser?

The City proposed curb side bus lanes here. Weβre open to other configurations, including ones that retain some parking and widen sidewalks in exchange for general purpose lanes. This could be centre running or offset bus lanes. Transit signals would allow a bus lane to make a turn like with R2 ext.

Bus Lanes for Hastings! | Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders
Hastings is a crucial transit connector in Vancouver. It needs bus lanes to save commuters time and reduce congestion. Take action today!
We can have buses that actually show up on time, but we need to speak up. Vancouver doesn't hear from transit riders enough.
Fill out the City's survey about Hastings by Monday Feb 9th, or send a letter anytime!

A graphic with a light pink background and the following text:
"The city is proposing 24/7 bus lanes in front of Hastings Park"
"(thumbs up) an extremely busy section for transit, with 1,000 buses a day"
a map of the all-day bus lanes being planned on Hastings, only between Renfrew and Boundary
"(meh face) we need bus lanes on the rest of Hastings too, where thereβs more delay!"
a map of bus delay along Hastings, which shows that the most intense delay is west of Renfrew, outside of the proposed bus lanes
On a dark pink background:
"Bus lanes help your bus show up on time."
An illustration of a bus with a speech bubble that says "I'm late again" and a squiggle signalling frustration above the bus.
A text message from a friend reads:
"the r5 is like stuck in trattic and this person shouted "I thought this was the rapid bus not the waiting in line bus!"" with a haha react
A dark pink circle on a light pink background contains the following text:
Transit doesnβt have to be slow and unreliable!
1) fill out the Cityβs survey with a supportive comment
2) send a letter asking for more bus lanes
All-day bus lanes on Hastings are coming! But only for a tiny section.
Extensive, all-day bus lanes would make bus trips feel more like SkyTrain, and they only need signs and paint.
