I recently saw this video by Aphra Hardwick on behalf of the Bristol University Neurodiverse Society (BUNsπŸŽ‚). The video includes quotes from BUNs members explaining why nature is important to them. I found it so moving! Green and wild spaces are so very precious 🌳🌊🌺 Thanks Aphra for letting me post

We argue that the strange arrangement of cells and circuits is the consequence of a reduction of our visual systems to a simple median eye in our ancient filter-feeding ancestors.

Looking across animals, the vertebrate eye is an obvious outlier. Why is it so different that other highly visual animals?

This is great! Bristol's press office decided that our paper wasn't worthy of a press release because "this area has already been covered (to some degree) before in the media" 😡 a humbling moment for sure. Would it be possible to add a link to our paper in the press release?

Assessing and mapping taxon-specific effects of ecological light pollution for environmental impact analysis Predicting the adverse effects of light at night is necessary to ensure compliance with laws and regulations that protect species. Using two case stud…

Environmental assessments need to account for spectrum and brightness of light affecting sensitive species. πŸŒ™

We map impact zones using "moonlight equivalent" measures accounting for species visual sensitivity, then apply spectral tuning and shielding.

Excited that my 2nd MSc paper is out in @journal-evo.bsky.social πŸ¦‹πŸŽ‰ doi.org/10.1093/evol...
We find Heliconius’ impressive visual memory is not due to increased visual-structure investment over that of their outgroup relatives, but instead consistent with specialisation of the central circuitry.

For years, experts have warned that nature loss would become a security threat.

Now a national security assessment confirms it: biodiversity collapse risks food shortages, economic instability and global disorder.

Nature underpins our global safety. So why is UK Government failing to protect it?

Finally out! We studied the retinas of the longest-living vertebrate, the Greenland shark, and found that the retinas remain remarkably healthy in animals around 150 years old. What is the mechanism? It may be a highly efficient DNA repair system. Enjoy!

Light pollution creates multiple threats to the movement ecology of nocturnal arthropod taxa Light pollution is a major contributing factor to declines in global biodiversity1,2 that is steadily increasing in both severity and spatial extent.3…

Our researchers reveal that light pollution disrupts nocturnal insects & spiders' movements.πŸ™οΈπŸ•·οΈ

Dr Rochelle Meah & Prof Nicholas Roberts highlight two key effects:

1️⃣ Masked day-to-night transitions. πŸŒ™πŸ•·οΈ
2️⃣ Blinded polarized light for navigation.β˜€οΈπŸ¦‹

To summarise: light pollution simultaneously impacts movement ecology in two very different nocturnal species by inhibiting activity and masking important visual compass cues. Very happy that this is out and that many collaborators-turned-friends are in the author list πŸ˜€πŸ•·οΈπŸ¦‹ (5/5)
