Trump Calls Somalis ‘Garbage’ He Doesn’t Want in the Country

It makes me deeply sad that this kind of hateful, dehumanizing language is now used on a regular basis, and we don't even flinch. It is bad for policy, bad for people, and bad for our souls.

They were promised a lifeline to 'graduate' from poverty. Then it was taken away Thousands of South Sudanese refugees and impoverished locals in Uganda saw a brighter future with a new USAID-funded project. They'd get $205 and coaching to build a business. Then came the cuts.

What I Saw at the Epicenter of Trump’s War on ‘Illegals’ Migrants thought they were following the rules. Then the rules changed.

Tim Rohn (Politico): "[W]hatever direct connection between a migrant’s behavior and a decision to arrest them might once have existed, that connection is now broken. . . .there is no longer any distinction between 'applying for asylum' and 'entering illegally.'"

First-of-its-kind sensory room at church welcomes neurodivergent parishioners “Having a sensory room in a place of worship is probably more important than anywhere else because everyone should feel welcome in their faith.”

What I love about this story is that the pastor went to a workshop, learned about sensory rooms for the first time, and asked an expert parishioner to lead the charge to build one. This is ministry! www.americamagazine.org/faith/2025/0...

I was fortunate to have a great convo with Terkel in the early 2000s when I was a page at the Chicago Historical Society's Research Center (and he was Distinguished Scholar in Residence). He threw down some wisdom but then promptly got me talking about my family - I can say I was a Studs interview!

For Christians this way of thinking & acting is unacceptable, since it sets certain political preferences above deep convictions of our faith: the inalienable dignity of each human person regardless of origin, race or religion & the supreme law of fraternal love (PopeFrancis. Fratelli Tutti, no. 39)

No one will ever openly deny that [migrants] are human beings, yet in practice, by our decisions and the way we treat them, we can show that we consider them less worthy, less important, less human. (Pope Francis, Fratelli tutti, no. 39)

Our own days, however, seem to be showing signs of a certain regression. Ancient conflicts thought long buried are breaking out anew, while instances of a myopic, extremist, resentful and aggressive nationalism are on the rise. (Pope Francis, Fratelli tutti, no. 11)

Happy Easter! One option for today's readings is Colossians 3:1-4. It reminds us that #Easter is not simply "turning the page" but helps us embrace the meaning of Christ's suffering and death in the light of his resurrection. I reflected on this passage in my book on baptism.
