Canadians are often called "nice" but it isn't true - we're not nice, we're kind hearted & care for each other. That's different. We're tough. We don't tolerate bullies. We're not doormats. We fight for our values. We stick together. Most of us abhor Trump & will fight his lunacy

A reflection of how low our society has fallen - President Jimmy Carter died this weekend & in virtually every condolence posting by a politician on X, they all have comments that are crass, mean-spirited, foul views about the politics of the poster & unrelated to the goodness of Jimmy Carter

Sad, but true.

Iโ€™m glad Iโ€™m Canadian (you know, a sovereign nation and historically good neighbour)

The words โ€œcareโ€ & โ€œcureโ€ are differentiated by a single vowel, but differences for #patients & #caregivers are vast. Letโ€™s put the โ€œcareโ€ back in #healthcare instead of our singular focus on cure.

Care doesnโ€™t always include cure but when cure is our only goal, care takes a backseat

Life is nothing if not interesting (to say the least). As we've struggled to explain my "complicated" course with #LongCovid, I asked my doc to humour me & test for Lyme Disease - guess what? I'm positive & they think I've had it the entire time. Now, a flurry of specialists & treatment initiated ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Being a #patient & #caregiver, Iโ€™ve learned that pursuing connected, locally delivered care is the only answer to the issues many families face every day. Being a pt & caregiver has brought me more meaningful insights into how we deliver #healthcare, than more than 20 years of a career in healthcare

Peer support for #caregivers is a lifeline. With sharing, we support each other & we give each other hope; hope to believe anything is possible. Everything is possible. Talk to your patientโ€™s caregivers to make sure they know about peer resources โ€“ help connect them if they donโ€™t

Having #LongCovid has made it crystal clear that we do not have a robust, systematic way to support caregivers. We need a co-designed person-centred system where supports are built in

Q: What happens when a #caregiver becomes a #Patient in Canada?

A: Nothing....absolutely nothing

I believe that the only way to achieve a truly person centred #healthcare system is to dismantle power imbalances by shifting power to #community, which will advance the goal of health and care being equitably provided to all Canadians.

Our health system is in peril. The future of Canadian #healthcare is in home & #communities, not institutions; but too many people in our #HealthSystem remain obsessed with protecting the past. They need to start clearing the way for the future, rather than continuing to obstruct it

The perception of #caregivers being unpleasant when they advocate for the people they are caring for means being labeled as bossy, obnoxious, unpleasant. I have been called all of these & more instead of being seen as decisive, persistent & committed member of the team. Still, we persevere

100% I keep saying weโ€™ve jerryrigged the system for so long that is no longer a system

Let's stop trying to fix symptoms of #HealthSystem problems; instead we should be carefully considering what exactly should be addressed at the root. Political expedience & 4 yr election cycles make us jump to inelegant policies that have unintended, often negative consequences.

As a #caregiver, itโ€™s essential that you become an expert in setting boundaries. Boundaries are the flip side of asking for help. If you can do both; if you can learn to say โ€œnoโ€ and โ€œI need help,โ€ youโ€™ve found the secret sauce for surviving, or even thriving, in this experience
