When the most popular games are platforms, access to those platforms is king.
Did "Let's play on console x"
became..."Let's join server y"?
BREAKING: PlayStation is shutting down Bluepoint Games, the studio responsible for modern remakes of classic games such as Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, Bloomberg News has learned.
A shocking end for a well-respected studio.
In a shocking piece of breaking news, Bluepoint Games, the team that Sony acquired back in September of 2021 is being shut down.
A letter reportedly from Herman Hulst explaining the closure is here in full.
Details:
Xbox moves in the direction of the most open/flexible/consumer friendly platform (PC), for the improved financial results.
Who else emulates these approaches?
According to the media reporting taken as a whole, who else benefits from this change in strategy?
In reality, who benefits?
Increasingly, the main-stream gaming press are not serving the Xbox gamer well or accurately.
If their coverage/reviews etc. doesn't ring true with the reality of my lived experience via Day 1 GamePass/user reviews/community sentiment, trust is eroded over time.
Gamers are the taste makers.

*Fast forward past repeated deaths to learn what not to do...
Struggling to conquer the platforming challenge on the way in, and then demonstrating mastery on the way out.
No greater feeling.
I'm a gamer. Of course.
This question is always posed in a way that sales are lost to GamePass subs.
When the reality is much closer to spending that otherwise would not have happened, only happens because of GamePass+Xbox rewards+Wish lists
Games you didn't know you liked.

An opening ceremony for "SEGA STORE TOKYO" (Shibuya PARCO) was held ahead of the official opening on Friday, July 18th.
After the opening, the store will become a permanent fixture, so be sure to stop by if you're in the area.

Yes.
Ultimate.
PC / S2 / Steamdeck.
We'd have to poll over 35 million subscribers to be sure of their reasons.
For me, the day-1 1st party releases and curated library repeatedly delivers interesting and varied games.
Only GotY that matters is your personal fav.
These industries did it to themselves. Maybe the big budget stuff also got stale. Consumers with less money are more discerning.
I think GamePass and Netflix are teaching us to only spend on great media and to explore/try new media (e.g. niche indie games/international hit series or films).
But I don't think the answer for successful releases is a binary one. Having any single platform storefront/subscription service dominate is not good for devs or consumers.
The openness of Steam is its strength and weakness vs. the competition.
Many devs choose to release across all. Hurts how?
They are definitely the preferred platform/tool for some (this is widely reported), especially when they can get the benefits (e.g. GamePass deal/dev costs mitigated/PR) without losing other revenue streams (e.g. simultaneous launch on other platforms).
If they are the preferred platform for some 3rd party/Indies, they don't have to rely on singular, cinematic, expensive, safe, AAA experiences alone.
And we the players get diversity of game-types/styles/experiences.
For members of the Xbox diner's club, it's strange how popular it is to tell patrons how their food tastes.
Maybe for the oldest/long standing players.
But, younger players are really only loyal to the games and expect them to follow them to their cages of choice.
Feels like when, not if...
Once you've tasted the sweet freedom of free software upgrades (backwards compatibility/smart delivery) or PlayAnywhere or Day 1 releases to sub services, going back to the old ways feels archaic.
Console players like their cages, but a roomier cage starts to look nice after a while...
As console SKUs shift from 1st party only to 3rd party produced (like PC graphics cards), consoles are evolving to become increasingly PC adjacent.
Years from now, will we look back on the Xbox ROG Ally as the bridge that bought console & PC eco-systems together?
When will Sony/PS follow?
