if you convince the most elite institutions (e.g. harvard) to betray victims and protect perpetrators, then all you gotta say to admin at any other university is "this is how they're doing it at harvard" & everyone assumes it's on the up-and-up, and soon that's "just the way it's done" everywhere.
to what extent was epstein driving institutional responses to perennial problems regarding sexual assault on campuses and the interpretation & application of Title IX's prohibition of sex discrimination in educational settings?
is a question on repeat in my brain.

I need people to understand that it’s not just Epstein, it’s the entire rape culture that existed before and after him at every socioeconomic level. That’s why Epstein, who I’ve never thought was particularly smart or interesting, was able to pull this all off—he recognized how abuse functions
When they say Me Too "went too far," they mean "got too close."
For me, I've found donating to organizations and mutual aid groups or to people who just need some extra money to get by is a real sanity-saver in these times of feeling helpless but full of rage.

So when I see people *finally* talking about accountability for the baddest of bad fascist actors "on the other side" of whatever this is... Not just imagery of guillotines but talks of nuremburg-like trials and graffiti that names names... That's our republic, and we just might keep it.
Before 2016, one was called an "America hater" for questioning U.S. exceptionalism, critiquing the disparate outcome of policy, or pointing out historical atrocities done in our names at home and abroad.
But there is no greater love than dissent, for it recognizes implicitly a capacity for change.
As a student of literature and history, I don't want this country to "go back" to any of its prior eras. I want a new era, where the end of this agony is a stronger reassertion that we WILL become the America of our most noble ideals *even if* it means killing the potent myth of our exceptionalism.
To believe the former is to have hope. To despair of the latter is to grasp the gravity of today.

The Great White Fathers’ repeated disavowals of their Black brothers and sons are foundational to U.S. conceptions of citizenship—and constitute one of the most glaringly obvious silences structuring white ignorance in this country & enabling fascism to fester or thrive but never die.

Friends, Claudette Colvin—the 15-year-old who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in March 1955 & joined the federal case against bus segregation that went to the Supreme Court — died today at age 86. But there are lots of myths and mis-impressions about her. A short corrective thread:
