Coquitlam #SueBigOil supporters gathered at Coquitlam City Hall today to urge @cityofcoquitlam to explore recovering a fair share of the city’s costs from the world’s largest polluters instead of passing those costs on to taxpayers.

1/2 Well, #BillC-5 just passed in the #SenateofCanada without amendments, but with a government commitment to amend it in the fall to ensure the public registry includes info about how projects will contribute to clean growth and to meeting Canada's climate objectives.
New blog: BC and Multnomah County, Oregon are both taking global consultancy McKinsey & Co. to court, raising big questions about the legal accountability of consultants & PR firms that mislead the public and lie about dangerous products. West Coast Lawyer @singingwithin.bsky.social gets into it 👇
I'm aware. I don't know if I've ever seen a CPC candidate at and all candidates meeting. But don't know why anyone would vote for someone who won't show up.
It's like the Leap Manifesto 2025, from 170 municipal leaders representing 10 million Canadians!
We need powerlines, not pipelines.
Big bold projects using Canadian resources to "create hundreds of thousands of good local jobs in cities, rural, and Indigenous communities."

Went to #ESS All Candidates Meeting last night. Green, NDP, Lib candidates all great, but CPC was a no show. They said prior commitment, but I think candidate Grant Cool didn't bother to come all the way from Uplands. #election2025 #CdnPoli #GreenParty #NDP #LPC #CPC
AND AS A REBATE PROGRAM, ITS EITHER REVENUE NEUTRAL OR A NET FINANCIAL BENEFIT FOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF CANADIANS!

Was surprised and delighted to see a sea otter swimming of of Macaulay Point in Esquimalt this morning. Too far for any good pictures on my phone. Never seen one live before, and they haven't lived here in generations.

Google La Rose v Canada and Mathur v Ontario for two cases currently before the courts.
I love that the lawyer who connected climate attribution to health risk science is one of @natureportfolio.bsky.social’s 10 people who shaped science in 2024.
She led the lawsuit against the Swiss govt for violating the rights of older women by failing to take steps to prevent climate change.
Good.

Good news for the youth bringing similar #climatechange cases in Canada. #Cdnpoli
While most discussions of which sectors contribute to #climatechange and #GHGEmissions focus on end-users, this @worldresources.bsky.social series of graphs shows that 75.7% of global emissions are from fossil fuels & less than 1/4 from other sources. #SueBigOil www.wri.org/insights/4-c...

Looking forward to watching it.
“The right to self-determination is a cornerstone of the international legal order,” Aguon told the 15 judges on the ICJ. “Yet climate change, and the conduct responsible for it, has already infringed the right to self-determination for the many peoples of Melanesia.”

"Contrary to the notion that it’s the public resisting the transition to clean energy, McKenna lays out clearly — from the vantage point of a person with a seat at the table — that the real resistance is coming from the fossil fuel industry."

How many people know that the potholes that litter our streets are worse due to extreme heat and precipitation? What about the costs of replanting dying urban trees due to drought? Installing new water treatment due to algal blooms or misting stations for heat waves? The list goes on.
Indeed a tragic example, but the reality is that particular storms or weather events are the tip of the iceberg in terms of municipal costs. This story raises questions about rebuilding stormwater infrastructure to address increased precipitation, but that's hardly mentioned.
An excellent piece by a thoughtful woman who acknowledges when she was wrong.
Anyone have good suggestions for an explainer video (5-10 minutes in length) on the many ways that #climatechange is costing local governments and driving done of the increases in municipal taxes we've been seeing (and expect to see)? #cdnpoli #localgov
Major investigation of offsets projects ('carbon markets') shows only 16% of carbon credits issued constitute real emission reductions
Yet countries agreed major new C markets at #COP29 with no obvious tightening of standards
Vast majority of offsetting is a scam

As incredible as it seems, I think this view was widespread among even climate activists until the divestment movement. I remember a high profile activist telling me that #SueBigOil we a bad idea, because solving the climate crisis required industry cooperation.
I thought hard about how to express what needs to be said. The climate crisis is accelerating as is energy transition. 🇨🇦 is blessed with natural & human resources to build the future. But the oil sands are taking us for fools. Time to be on the right side of history. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...
