Just got into a GO Train argument with a bunch of high school students during my morning commute.

So yeah, my day is off to a great start.

That’s a pretty extreme statement - and likely not applicable to any sitting MP.

The polling is obviously a huge piece of the puzzle. But that’s to be expected. If you don’t think you could win, why would you run? Politics is grueling - and campaigns even more so.

What should Toronto area mayors do during a trade war? Build. Every level of government has a role to play in dealing with the current crisis. Ontario municipalities should not be permitted to shirk their responsibilities.

"It turns out that no amount of bureaucracy, bickering or political division can slow Canada down when under threat. So what are Ontario’s municipal governments doing to assist in the economic war effort? Sadly, not much β€” especially when it comes to housing." www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Some pretty nice designs in here. Kudos to the consultant team that led the work. The federal government has unveiled its new Housing Design Catalogue with 50 housing designs for rowhouses, fourplexes, sixplexes, and accessory dwelling units www.housingcatalogue.cmhc-schl.gc.ca

This post does an excellent job explaining it: www.cigionline.org/articles/can...

TL;DR: Canada has a lot of leverage in the world of IP. Why can't πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ companies create generic versions of key parts, drugs, etc? Because we agreed not to in exchange for an equitable trading relationship.

The international rules around trading were largely set by - and heavily benefit - the USA.

If Trump is going to play this game, it's time for #Canada to rip up or re-think some foundational tenants of that regime.

First up: Intellectual Property protections for US companies.

New City of Mississauga report advocates for lowering Development Charges!

Never let anyone tell you that cities can't lower DCs. They have, and can.

High DCs are a choice, and one that hurts renters and homebuyers.

Two reactions to this "Trump will make Canada a state" talk:

1. Go f*ck yourself
2. Why would all of Canada only get *one* state?

The reality is that Provinces control most levers re: housing. Zoning, building by-laws, dev charges, Land Tribunal, etc are within provincial control.

The #1 act the fed gov't can do re: housing is pressure the provinces into reform. The new Liberal leader must start there. #cdnpoli #HousingCrisis

The post-Trudeau leadership race is an opp to put #housing & cost of living front-and-centre:

The next LPC leader should immediately push to:
- Eliminate GST on new 🏠's
- Tie future Prov $$ transfers to 🏠 reform: eliminate DCs, simplify zoning, reduce red tape
- πŸ”Ό skilled trades PR stream

This is partly because cities are being asked to do more with limited revenue tools. But it’s also because it’s politically β€œeasy” to tax future residents vs. those voting today.

Ultimately what matters is bringing costs down. The Prov must step up to make that happen. #ONpoli #housingcrisis

A massive chunk of DC funds (look at TO as an example) don’t go to those things. In fact, the problem is actually that DCs have been used to subsidize existing residents, as the % of city budgets derived from DCs has grown + councils have kept prop tax ⬆️ below rate of expense growth.

The Provincial Gov't controls all the major levers for housing affordability in Ontario.

We should do everything we can to build more housing and reduce ppl's cost of living. #ONpoli #housing #TOpoli

Implementing all these recos should be step 1: files.ontario.ca/mmah-housing...

Development Charges (DCs) are one of the main drivers of housing unaffordability in Ontario. And look at how they've grown!

It's a tax on growth that municipalities have come to rely on. If we don't address DCs, we can't bring down housing costs.

More on DCs here: opencouncil.ca/development-...

The Ontario #HousingCrisis is #1 issue for those under 40 - and one of the biggest issues for the province as a whole.

These proposals are great. Every party should commit to these, along with other proposals in the Ontario Housing Affordability Task Force. #ONpoli

And that's a wrap on our Annual General Meeting, December 7th 2024!

Our votes for new board members are being counted, and we're making plans to expand our reach and continue to advocate for effective policy to transform housing in Toronto.

Thanks to all who made this happen!

The β€œcriteria” for removal here are… insane.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ doesn’t have an Open Borders problem… and if we could have stopped the flow of Fentanyl into this country - so save thousands of Canadian lives… we would have.

These are unachievable - by design.

It appears that Vaughan Mayor Del Duca has just made the biggest reduction in Development Charges by any municipality in Ontario (however, from a very high starting point).

Cities are finally seeing that these tax levels are unsustainable for new housing!
