The German media also seems to go with "fortgeschrittene Abschreckung", which means "advanced" rather than "forward deterrence." We'll see whether this sticks here.

French President Emmanuel Macron has just given a truly remarkable speech on France's nuclear policy at a moment of great anxiety in Europe. I wanted to offer an early comment. Welcome to the age of 'Dissuasion Avancée' in Europe.

But none of this was in the cards, was it? The French red lines have been quite consistent... Therefore, I'm with you - the speech represents a welcome step forward, not least when it comes to the new steering group with Germany (and, potentially, other allies). Not an NPG, but still...
The history of the non-recognition of their annexation also has implications for us today I would argue. It matters how we refer to Crimea or other regions illegally annexed. Even if it may take decades and even if it may seem futile, it matters how we speak about them.
Quite rare to see a chart that says quite so overtly that no one involved has the slightest clue what’s happening here

Finally some straight talk about the biggest elephant in the room. @slotkin.senate.gov emphasizes: „We‘re in a struggle for our democracy. I‘m very concerned about the 2026 elections.“ References the very concerning comments by Trump and others.
Yes, indeed. Seems many people overlooked that when listening to Rubio. We have a session on this very question on the agenda tonight. If I may add, this is not a new phenomenon. See Munich Security Report 2020.
Hi Steve! Have to find Dan here, too!
And thank you, Jintro!

Very glad you were part of this effort, Liviu! Thanks for your commitment!
We will discuss the report at #MSC2026. For those who read German: Paul-Anton Krüger has written a very good summary of the report for "Der Spiegel". www.spiegel.de/politik/deut...

A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.
Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
Auschwitz took time.
Exactly, and those who are most alarmed/angry/worried today are long-time transatlanticists, NATOniks or whatever you want to call them, not those who have always preferred European independence.

All you need to know...
Oh, absolutely!
Laughter in the audience... Some people just couldn't suppress it.
The feeling is mutual. We don‘t recognize the United States anymore. And it breaks my heart. Greetings from Europe!
This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.
This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

This speech should be read (or listened to) by everyone in Europe - and beyond. For Europeans, it's a must. So many great quotes, hard to pick one. Well done, @mark-carney.bsky.social.
