To be clear, this is not my scholarly area of expertise. There are other folks who are far smarter and savvier about the topic than I am. This is just me speaking as a history buff and someone who does teach economic geography.
However, the causal links are pretty undeniable, in my opinion.
I have the (perhaps) unpopular opinion on the left that the Soviet Union wouldn't have survived in its extant form in the 1990s with glasnost and perestroika, and that these developments were good for the country.
However, that does not mean that unbridled oligarchic capitalism was the answer.
The massive looting of the Russian economy during the "shock therapy" era of economics post 1991 (the era of vouchers for state industries finding their way into the hands of oligarchs) is a direct reason behind the oligarchic economic structure of Russia today.
