Just played the REPLACED demo. It's great! Silky smooth combat and animations and a true heir to the 'cinematic pixel-art' style. Stirred up a bunch of feelings - it feels like the game TLN could've been. Very excited to delve deeper into the full thing.

I get that to some extent the Whispers and all the crossroads of fate shit is meta commentary on the expectations of the fandom re. the remake of a beloved franchise but any time a story tries to fuck with changing destiny it just undermines the actual character journeys. Also it’s just boring.

Finally got around to finishing FF7 remake. All that Whisper stuff is absolute bobbins. If Rebirth doesn’t pay off all the Sephiroth mystery a bit i’ll be furious because in just the context of Remake he's an utterly awful villain. Arbitrary motivations and personality of a fencepost.

Agreed. I think pushing for that detailed disclosure is still important. And within a studio culture that hasn’t already adopted it we must fight to keep it that way.

If want to test whether someone can write in house style, what you should actually test them on is can they respond to feedback. Give them a pre-written piece with review notes and ask them to rewrite it to address those notes.

Not that Larian has anything like as unique a tone as they hope.

The sad thing is they’ll obviously find people. It’s Larian, lots of people will walk over hot coals for a chance there. But it’s not fair and those people will probably learn the hard way that prestige does not equal happiness.

A writer can tell if an experienced writer can write from their existing samples or 1/2 a page. This whole house style thing is egotistical nonsense. Writers are like actors, their entire job is adapting their style accordingly.

Also, Larian don’t have Narrative Design roles and honestly it shows.

Yep. I did that writing test and had an interview a couple of years ago. It was wild. The (negative) feedback I got on the test was some of the most bafflingly inept criticism i’ve ever received.

My experience wasn’t half as bad as many others but it was still the worst recruitment i’ve done.

I wish that they would! I can imagine how scary it is to try and start something like that though.

everything i’ve heard about Vincke suggests that no one is willing to risk being rude to him, and when they’re direct it doesn’t matter anyway because he has to have his own way about everything all of the time.

I’ve worked in a studio where the artists used AI to start the concept phase. I gave them a brief and they gave me like 20 embarrassing AI images. I was like ’and this helps us narrow down the final design how exactly?’ It was infuriating and only lengthened the process.

Keep writing and deleting a reply to this. Don’t really know what to say. Just unthinkably sad like so much else. Guns just cannot be legal anywhere in the world.

Played the Birdcage demo and it’s a mix of Ikaruga and Radiant Silver Gun with the MGS codex. It’s wonderful.
