In the 1960’s, the Irish State set up the commission on itinerancy to ‘absorb’ Travellers into the mainstream. That meant: destroying micro-economies, fragmenting kinship systems, forcing settlement and expanding state control. It was assimilation.
In Ireland, Ireland recognised Irish Travellers as an ethnic minority on 1st March 2017. But what is recognition worth if nothing materially changes?

The government's been forced to table the amendment following the High Court ruling a Declaration of Incompatibility.
The amendment will be brought to the House of Lords on 25th February.
If successful, it'll remove teeth from one of the most draconian anti-Traveller legislation in decades. (2/2)

That’s pretty much correct - problematisation or silence, and when it comes to health the silence is loud. I’m writing an academic chapter about Travellers social class positioning and its connection to ethnocide which has made me think more deeply on this stuff atm
