➡️ Methods: I outline a dramaturgical approach to world politics mobilizing metaphors of theater such as “performance,” “stage,” and “script” to study the making of private authority.

➡️ Theory: I work with the concept of translation as developed in Actor-Network Theory and introduce it to the theory of International Relations. Translation sensitizes to the ways in which new actor) networks are formed, pointing to the changes in things and people taking part in the process.
➡️ Empirics: The book traces the formation of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), now the most authoritative private organization for forestry certification. It provides an in-depth analysis of a constitutional moment for private authority.
⁉️ Why it matters: Environmental institutions continue to fail addressing the socio-environmental crisis. We need novel imaginaries and a deeper understanding of how people come up with new forms of governing human–nature relations – “The Politics of Beginning“ engages with such a story.
