These words give a glimpse into Pte George Nugent’s story. Killed on the Somme, on 1st July 1916, George’s remains lay undiscovered for over 80 years. They were finally laid to rest on 1st July 2000.

I recently finished Michael Korda's _Muse of Fire_, and what a powerful journey it was. Korda offers a moving account of the First World War's poetic titans—Sassoon, Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, and Alan Seeger. What struck me most was how their lives often intersected in profound ways.

From the moment the first machine gun rang out over the Western Front, one thing was clear: mankind’s military technology had wildly surpassed its medical capabilities. Bodies were battered, gouged, hacked, and gassed.

The Anderson Intelligencer Jan 5 1915 https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn93067658/1915-01-05/ed-1/seq-1/# This photograph, just received in the United States, shows part of what was left of Whitby Abbe, one of the famous historic churches of England after the bombardment by German Warships which raided the east coast of England Dec. 16. Shells from the cruisers some miles at sea beat down the old walls until little was left. It was among many other buildings of Whitby, Scarborough. Hartelpool and West Hartelpool damaged by German shells. Whitby, which was the smallest of the bombarded towns, was famous chiefly for its beautiful old cathedral. Tradition has it that Robin Hood and Little John practiced archery from its towers. The abbey was founded in the seventh century, but the buildings were practically rebuilt in the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. The old church towers formed a conspicuous landmark from the sea. The town itself never has been robbed by modern enterprises of its Old World charm.

Dogs Having their day as sentries in the British Army More and more are the fighting nations realizing the reliance they can place in the dog. Belgium has made extensive use of the dog in the various divisions of her army. Both France and Germany have found the dog a valuable assistant in the Red Cross divisions. Now Great Britain has come to the fore and is training dogs for sentry purposes. This wire-haired terrier shown in the trenches with the British fighters is one of Major Richardson's well known sentry dogs. Already numbers of them are doing good service with the army at the front. They are sent to do outpost duty accompanying sentries on patrol.
