Rand Paul Says Iran War and Gas Prices Could Doom GOP
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) warned Tuesday that Republicans could face major losses in the upcoming midterm elections if the conflict with Iran continues and energy prices remain high. The libertarian-leaning senator said rising oil costs and prolonged military action could damage the party politically.
Speaking on Fox Business’s “Mornings with Maria,” Paul said voters are already concerned about economic conditions. “Already, we are behind the eight-ball as far as the electoral process,” Paul said, adding that continued military action against Iran could push oil prices higher and further hurt Republicans at the ballot box.
“I think if you add in high gas prices, high oil prices and if we are still bombing Iran with kinetic action … I think you’re going to see a disastrous election,” Paul said.
The warning comes as U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran continue and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted, sending global energy markets into volatility. West Texas Intermediate crude briefly surged above $100 per barrel before dropping below $85 Tuesday. Meanwhile, the national average price for regular gasoline climbed above $3.50 per gallon, according to AAA.
Economic concerns remain a major political issue for voters. A January Pew Research Center survey found more than 70 percent of Americans rate economic conditions as fair or poor, with majorities expressing concern about the cost of healthcare, housing, and consumer goods.
Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in Congress heading into the midterm elections.
