In situations where some physicians would admit involuntarily but others would not, holding patients against their will leaves them worse off.

I recentlyβfor the first timeβspoke openly & honestly about my 11+year journey w/ #BipolarDisorder +chronic su!cidality on my friend @UmaRChatterjee podcast @AChatWithUma. Grateful to Uma for creating the opportunity for me to speak truth to stigma. Check out Part 1! (part 2 coming this week!)
A dark, shadowy corridor with dim overhead lighting and labeled doors fades into the distance. At the center, a silhouetted figure stands facing forward, casting a long shadow. Bold white text reads: βTrump, RFK Jr. are pushing psychiatric confinement, not mental health careβ with smaller text below: βJordyn Jensen & Nev Jones.β The Hill's blue-and-white logo appears in the bottom right corner.

As political leaders push forced psychiatric confinement, the federal government moves to dismantle PAIMIβone of the only safeguards against abuse in psych settings.

9/9 How should we fund this better approach? "Slow the cash flow to law enforcement, reject wasteful and ineffective involuntary care, and reclaim simply caring, as we do in Canada, for each other."

8/9 Prevention is possibleβthrough investment in supportive housing and accessible healthcare with on-demand access to voluntary mental health supports, not through expanded policing powers and involuntary detention.

Alberta's new Compassionate Intervention Act allows police to force people into treatment. A doctor serving unhoused populations witnessed a troubling reality with expanding involuntary treatment while the system remains broken.

Here is a key paragraph:
The proposal would reduce the more than $47 billion budget of the NIH to $27 billion β a roughly 40 percent cut. It would consolidate NIHβs 27 institutes and centers into just eight.

This is Utah in case anyoneβs wondering how pissed off people are. I have never seen anything like this.
Wow. Pittsburgh.

Are we alone?

Are we helpless?

We are fighting back. Our movement has been silenced by the media hereβbut we are not backing down. This is what our streets looked like across multiple cities. Tomorrow, there will be more of us! Raise a glass to freedom.

I've already had two federal grants terminated and face a 33% pay cut due to future terminations. It's painful, but not as painful as the conversations I'm having every day with brilliant trainees in graduate school and postdoctoral positions who see little future for themselves in US science.

Along with the firings of up to 1300 co-workers this week and the removals of several institute leaders, NIH employees are dealing with another blow from the administration of President Donald Trump: a mandate to eliminate $2.6 billion in contracts. scim.ag/43XU1nd
Goodbye CDC, NIH, FDC

A helpful read on some of the legal avenues for appeal. What the new administration is doing to #NIH (& other HHS orgs like #CDC, #FDA) is not only economically wasteful but blatantly, morally bankrupt. People will be more sick and die needlessly as a result of these actions, now and in the future.
NIH staff are instructed to hold all awards located in South Africa, China, Russia, Iran, North Korea but also other countries I hadn't seen reported, including Nicaragua, Pakistan, Eritrea, Cuba, Burma, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Yemen, Venezuela, per source familiar w guidance.
Researchers did not mince words about this purge of senior NIH leadership:

These cuts come on Jay Bhattacharya's first day as NIH director.
What happened within the NIH this morning is disgusting. We will not be able to continue to function. We lost entire offices critical to managing ONGOING CLINICAL TRIALS. Fuck everyone who allowed this to happen.
