Yep, we’re lucky to inhabit the most unimportant stretch of ocean in the world. We’d probably still need some level of capability to deter idle and irrational bullying, though. The ability to do more damage than we’re worth.

Not really. Nobody can really bother us on an existential level unless they have a very big forward base somewhere in the South Pacific (we’re talking very large and military-capable airfields and ports).
The US has Pago Pago, though it’s thoroughly civilian. China has absolutely zip.
