Written English has barely changed in 300 years. If you can read Harry Potter, you can read Robinson Crusoe (1719).
I am honoured to be one of the speakers at the Linguists Collective Conference tomorrow (Saturday 21st February), celebrating International Mother Language Day. I am speaking in the evening slot, but there is a great line-up all day, check out the programme here:

😂 I'm surprised how much cool Duplo there is now, it's way more diverse than when I was little!
Oh this is amazing!! 🤩
A cover page that says 'The Katabasis Book Nook', with a Lego book nook on a shelf surrounded by mythology and Underworld-related books.
Side view of the book nook, with text that says, 'This year, for International Lego Classicism Day 2026, I'm building an Underworld Book Nook.
View of the Lego book nook in the dark, with light-up Lego pieces providing illumination.
Full side view of the book nook, with windows and characters.
It's #InternationalLEGOClassicismDay! 🎉
This year I've been building a LEGO Katabasis Book Nook, which has been a ridiculous amount of fun! Here are a few pictures - and you can find the whole thing on my website: classicalstudies.support/2026/02/20/i...

Thank you! And yes, the session was great - both fun and really stimulating.
Wonderful! 😂
Happy International Lego Classics Day everyone! My offering this year is a Duplo version of a recent research article about writing on Mount Hymettos, Athens, home to some very important inscriptions.

Brilliant, thank you - I'll be looking forward to the publication! I remember the event of course, will be great to see those papers in print.
Ah I wish I could have caught that! Are there any recent or forthcoming publications on directionality in these sorts of inscriptions?
Oops reposted this when I noticed a mistake, sorry!
Palmleaf Linear B tablet in purple Play-doh, reading pi-pa MUL 1 ko-wo 1
Purple Play-doh Linear B tablet with red stylus and son's curly red hair in the background
Turns out you can get a really nice bladed stylus with Play-doh, perfect for Linear B!
I do but I don't know where she is at the moment!
To render a scribe unable to write from the inkwell: Squeeze the juice of a tamarind and transfer it to the inkwell. No scribe will manage to write from it.
(Warning) Be aware that the juice of tamarind spoils ink, when it is added to it, and that the pen cannot catch anything of it, and God knows best.
Al-Razi, 10th century, vs. al-Dimashqi, 16th century (unquestionably a subtweet). I know which of the two I'd want to hang out with.
UNESCO has declared 9th February World Greek Language Day (building on the national day), which seems like a good day to share my recently published open access article:
"Mount Hymettos, Athens: A holy place for writing", EGI vol. 1.

The first day of my Kickstarter campaign has been plagued with bots making fake pledges, apparently the latest form of phishing for personal data.
Please check the campaign out at www.kickstarter.com/projects/end... and, if you are in a position to do so, make a genuine pledge!
