Many families are unnecessarily involved in the family policing system due to missing school. Poor attendance should not be a cause to suspect maltreatment, but rather a question of how we can better support families: www.nytimes.com/2026/02/19/n...

CFR is proud to join advocates statewide in Support of NY For All, read this article by AM Reyes to understand why this bill is so important
This unlawful practice violates Fourth Amendment law. CFR continues to call for greater protections for immigrants and opposed the abuse of power displayed by agency overreach.
Allowing ICE to abuse power and break the law threatens all of our constitutional rights. Authorizing agents to forcibly enter homes without residentsβ consent or a judicial warrant is guidance that violates civil liberties, and must be corrected bit.ly/4rzphRG
Federal immigration officers are asserting sweeping power to forcibly enter peopleβs homes without a judgeβs warrant, according to an internal Immigration and Customs Enforcement memo bit.ly/4clDOMz
As Public Defenders, we welcome the words of Chief Judge Rowan Wilson, which have been championed by impacted parents and their allies for so long. Fully resourcing families is the way forward, continuing the tired ways of the past will only lead to more harm @mayor.nyc.gov
Family court is not equipped to support families in what they really need -- more resources. Many issues that lead to the conditions that land families in legal trouble are rooted in poverty, such as poor health and nutrition, inadequate medical care, and housing instability bit.ly/3M5pmOe
βI Have Never Felt So Much Fearβ: Immigrant Children Speak Out on Life Inside ICE Jail in Dilley, TX
The lawsuit filed by @legalaidnyc.bsky.social alleges that OCFS has violated the constitutional rights of hundreds of incarcerated youth, including those with disabilities. Young people deserve opportunities for rehabilitation, not more trauma.
Young people are experiencing horrendous conditions while incarcerated in facilities run by OCFS. This lawsuit alleges that the agency is subjecting young people to isolation as a form of punishment and to make up for staffing shortages bit.ly/4pyYxzr
Today, the Campaign for Access, Representation, and Equity (CARE) for Immigrant Families urged immediate and decisive state action to protect Immigrant New Yorkers from the Trump administrationβs cruel and indiscriminate attacks.

In a new op-ed for @cityandstateny.bsky.social, NY State Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Catalina Cruz, and NY State Senator John Liu call for immediate funding for immigrant legal defense to protect immigrant New Yorkers from cruel federal attacks.
The passage of the Anti-Harassment in Reporting Act is a powerful victory for New York families. CFR is proud to be among the organizations and advocates that supported this bill aimed at protecting families from baseless and harassing allegations. bit.ly/4jrwGj8

CFR is proud to be part of a citywide coalition of nonprofit legal services organizations launching a new know-your-rights website resource to help New Yorkers navigate encounters with law enforcement, ICE, and public demonstrations. Check it out at ourcityourrights.org
Exacerbating family separation through deportation, incarceration of youth and adults, and forced removal under the guise of care makes children less safe.

As critics claim Raise the Age is failing, the real failure lies in how itβs being implemented. The system is failing vulnerable youth- they receive little to no supportive services in their community, and no education support once jailed. It is time to ensure support for young people.
NYC is failing to provide basic education services to youth in juvenile detention. A vulnerable group of young people are contending with gaps in services and a lack of support, both in and out of detention. bit.ly/47LRLki
Anonymous reporting allows anyone to make a bad faith report with no accountability for the harm they cause.
CFR supports Anti-Harassment in Reporting because New York families shouldnβt be harmed by false and malicious calls to the SCR. We urge @GovKathyHochul to sign this bill!
ICYMI: We signed onto a letter calling upon NY state officials to allocate state funds to protect SNAP benefits. bit.ly/3XdSTae. The family policing system conflates poverty with neglect- lets not let food insecurity be the reason a family is separated.
The Court noted that, "rather than foster reunification, almost all of the child services agencyβs actionsβand its failures to take actionβensured that the parent-child bond disintegrated." We thank the Court for hearing this case and ruling in favor of justice for Mr. Z. bit.ly/4qjKeQU
Mr. Z is an immigrant father who lost his parental rights after his infant son was removed from his care due to his wifeβs disability. His son was placed in foster homes that did not share the familyβs language, and Mr. Z was unable to communicate with his son.
πVICTORY!π Today, the New York State Court of Appeals reversed the termination of CFR client Mr. Z's parental rights because the foster agency failed to demonstrate that it had made diligent efforts to reunify Mr. Z and his son before seeking to terminate their relationship.
NYCβs juvenile detention centers are so overcrowded that about 100 young people have been sleeping in classrooms and common areas. The unacceptable exception given to ACS to properly house youth in detention has led to dire consequences for young people bit.ly/4qd3LCs @gothamist.com
Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers could lose their food assistance benefits as soon as November. Ushering in these already cruel and nonsensical cuts earlier than expected this coming winter will have brutal consequences for the most vulnerable bit.ly/47g8Gel

As lawyers, social workers, and parent advocates who work to prevent or minimize family separation, we are alarmed by the Trump Administrationβs attacks on immigrant families and their due process rights.
Itβs crucial that journalists uplift parents impacted by family policing with accuracy + compassion. As Diana shared: βSystem-involved parents are unfairly demonized by the press or their perspectives are not covered at all.β Read more about the seminar here: bit.ly/4nW5jir
This summer, CFR presented at Poynterβs βCovering Child Welfare: A Journalistβs Guide to Impactful Reportingβ seminar. We shared our interdisciplinary team model, myths vs. realities of family court, and key reminders for reporting on impacted families.
It is now more important than ever to dispel misinformation and correct misinterpreted data. Since publication in the Post, inaccurate claims have been repeated to bolster opposition to the bill. We continue to echo the calls of many experts to pass the Anti-Harassment in Reporting Bill
