I share about walking, biking, great cities, & progressive politics. I work for @streetsalliance.bsky.social (Seattle's walking, biking, and streets for people nonprofit), but these are my personal opinions.

Apples

Apples

Tonight new apple: Wild Twist. Soooo the name definitely oversells this apple, but it’s still solid. A Honeycrisp / Pink Lady cross the Pinky Lady really brings down the sweetness level which I prefer, and the crispness is there from Honeycrisp. A solid apple, but not a wild twist on anything

Seattle, King County Leaders Promise Climate Action β€” Accountability Next Seattle and King County's new leadership promise climate action β€” from cleaner transit to more tree canopy β€” but South Seattle communities are watching for the data and accountability to prove it.

"We need to [be]...transitioning away from a car-centric transportation system and toward more dense, walkable, affordable neighborhoods. Not only are vehicles one of the major contributors to our climate crisis, they're also dangerous & are killing our neighbors" @cmeddielin.bsky.social 🎯 as always

πŸ›’οΈπŸ“ˆThere has never been a better time to drive less.

One barrier people have to driving less is thinking that they need to convert ALL their car trips to walking, biking, or transit. But it's not all or nothing. 48% of trips American city-dwellers make are under 3 miles! Try πŸšΆπŸ»πŸš΄πŸΎβ€β™€οΈπŸ›΄πŸšŽ for those!

I think that's still sort of the case sometimes: "Cyclists with bicycles are not allowed to board any railcar exceeding agency-defined crowding thresholds. Sound Transit personnel have the right to refuse bicycle boardings in the event of overcrowding."

But I definitely agree with your overall point that transit agencies (looking at you water taxis) haven't caught up to family bikes.

Columbia park and 36th aerial

Here in Seattle: Do you ever dream about living on 36th Ave S in Columbia City where your front door opens onto a sidewalk and park? Seems like a great place to live! Maybe we should pedestrianize other streets so more people can enjoy this kind of life?

Yes, but what if we have to remove a few car parking spaces to make room for bus lanes, bike lanes, or pedestrian corner extensions? Let’s not get hasty here

"This is what the jackboots actually look like, people. We have seen the enemy, and it's right here at home."

This was a meeting about a mild transportation project to decrease speeding, improve lighting, and make an accessible barrier protected trail.

Or a totalitarian invasion? Hard to know.

Car crossing the crosswalk at MLK & Edmonds while the Walk signal is on.

Another day, another close call on MLK Way. This driver accelerated through the red light and narrowly avoided the crowd that had started to cross.

Raised crosswalks at Link stations would have prevented this incident.

It’s official! We have changed our name to Rainier Valley Safe Streets as part of the rebranding of now Seattle Streets Alliance @sngreenways.bsky.social

This helps with past confusion (we don’t manage the city’s greenways program)

With a new name, our advocacy for safer streets for all continues

The Seattle @streetsalliance.bsky.social is one of the most significant safe streets organizations to form in recent memory anywhere in the nation. Their bottom-up leadership model is powerful and could be adapted in many other places. It's empowering for volunteers and fun to start a local group.

Seattle Neighborhood Greenways becomes the Seattle StreetsΒ Alliance Seattle Neighborhood Greenways is now the Seattle Streets Alliance. "It’s a better explanation of who we are and what we’re about,” said Streets Alliance Executive Director Gordon Padelford. It's true. The organization convenes coalitions around safe streets and transit and housing. They have led and helped lead major pushes to increase the size of multiple transportation levies and then helped gather support to pass those levies.
