Although upon reflection the whole getting screamed at online DID discourage me from spreading shit outside closed spaces that were already fully saturated with it, so, maybe it did help broadly. It just didn’t help ME in the moment. Which is okay for me because I didn’t have children.
I had comparable interactions with plenty of random strangers that are not at all memorable and, at best, did not help me at all. I’m not saying any of them were wrong, but, I can say it didn’t help.
What DID help was patient and compassionate college instructors and medical providers.
But all that was memorable to me and worked out in the end to help me understand how dangerous and harmful this shit actually is specifically and ONLY because we actually knew each other and I know, with absolute certainty, that she is a good person who genuinely cared about me.
And being a high control religious group where women are prohibited from any kind of official positions, “pastor’s wife” functionally IS a position of power. Directly going at her would’ve had a particular social cost, going at me (already stigmatized as I was, especially) didn’t. I get it, I do
And I realize now how incredibly, unbelievably painful it must have been to her to see the *wife of her pastor* spreading shit online, and then see that shit starting to take hold of the next generation of young women. She was hurting, and afraid for her son, and afraid for ME. And rightfully angry.
That was fully the extent of the thought for me. Just like a ‘huh that does sound weird’ thing. It was totally mundane but it DID sound weird!
And then a nurse in our congregation, with a medically vulnerable son, saw it and went off on me.
I get it in hindsight, don’t blame her, she wasn’t wrong
e.g. there was an image going around on Facebook (I saw posted by my pastor’s wife) of a vaccine consent form that said something about it not being tested or proven in some specific way that I’m sure had to do with ethical limitations of testing on humans. I commented “huh it really just says that”
The church I grew up in wasn’t even like overtly anti-vax (and to the best of my knowledge still isn’t, but I do know it’s gotten worse). I frequently got yelled at online for making what I thought were pretty tame comments on what I realize now was anti-vax propaganda. It definitely didn’t help lol
When I was in my early 20s I met most definitions of “vaccine hesitant.” I didn’t think nurses and doctors were malicious or all being duped and I wasn’t eugenicist, I was just raised in an environment that fostered and encouraged distrust and deliberately provided inadequate science education.

or more likely they severely underestimated 1) the skill level required to do the job 2) my skill level specifically
